What Do You Do If Your Building Collapses?

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...-collapse.html

Lets say you built and own a building. It collapses and almost 400 people die (the figure is still being revised). As a good citizen, do you hand yourself in and take the consequences which will at the very least be life behind bars with a bunch of crazies. Remember, nobody will have any sympathy for you, least of which your prison mates - you are a murderer in the eyes of most people.

Run like hell if it's not really your fault. Meaning you had no idea there was a danger of collapse. However if you were a POS scumlord and neglected the building knowing it had serious problems, then probably off your self.

Prison at no cost in some 3rd world country.

Well, you could theoretically wind up with 400 life sentences. The problem is that if each life sentence adds an average of say 20 years (reduced for good behaviour), the total bill could be 8000 years. The average male probably has a life expectancy of about of 80 years and this guy must have a good 50 years left.

So he might have to do another 7950 years after he's died.

Did the owners supply defective materials or labor in the construction of the building or conspire with others to do so?

Did the local building officials do slump tests at the concrete pours ( of the structural beams in particular) and concrete compressive strength testing of cores from the dried pours. Did the local officials enforce the building codes and building safety regulations? Was the structural steel concrete reinforcement inspected properly?

Lot of unanswered questions here ... Maybe, a few Building Inspectors, Architects, Building Contractors and Materialmen should be in jail too?

This sounds like more of a political witch hunt to me to absolve liability and feed someone found easily to the angry mob.

EddyTheDog 04-28-2013 08:24 AM

It's a third world country. The building codes there are shit and this guy probably wasn't any better or worse than any other building owner on his block. However 400 people died and it's a third world country.. He is to blame but who knows how old the building was, if it was somewhat new they will probably go after the contractor as well.

Of course they will never go after the govt building inspectors or the guys that took the bribes in the govt to let stuff like this slide by. He will be in jail for life or executed no matter if he's guilty of negligence or it it was truly an accident or out of his control. Doesn't matter he will be the scrape goat. :2 cents:

It's Bangladesh. Turn yourself in. Pay money to get out within a week and build an another building.

As soon as he is born again. Put him in jail. Do they believe in reincarnation?

It matters not whether reincarnation is believed, its whether reincarnation exists (in fact).

The death toll has just surpassed 600 so it looks like he's murdered 600 people. That could mean 600 life sentences and lot more years in prison than my previous estimate.

Sorry, but knowing how shit works in the third world, I'd first try to pay off the right people, but if that didn't work I'd leave the country.

azpoindexter 06-22-2013 09:42 AM

Then just roll away or crawl away. That's the non legular equivalent of running away.
