Show me the CarFax!

Carfax Sued For $50 Million By 120+ U.S. Dealers
Carfax's catchy ads have encouraged millions of Americans to say "Show me the Carfax!" when purchasing used cars. That's great for Carfax's bottom line, but not so much for the dealers who have to provide those brand-name reports -- to the tune of $16.95 a pop, or a monthly subscription of up to $1,549.

According to AutoNews, 120 dealerships from across the U.S. are now suing Carfax for violating antitrust laws. And according the lawyer handling the case -- Leonard Bellavia of Bellavia Blatt Andron & Crossett in Mineola, New York* -- dozens more dealerships have submitted paperwork to join the suit.

Consumers can get their own reports.

If they are accurate, I don't think the dealers have a leg to stand on.

Unless they have changed, CARFAX only shows histories for vehicles that have been submitted directly to them. They are pretty much a scam. They have faced growing criticism over the years for this "hidden" fact.

"Adding a little bit of spice to the plaintiff's case is the fact that Carfax reports aren't always accurate. Carfax and its competitors rely largely on the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, a database of insurance claims and other data pulled from 41 states. Vehicle info from other regions can be left out of those reports, resulting in inaccuracies, not unlike the kind recently uncovered on 20/20. (Check out that news segment, embedded above.)"

A few years ago I was banged into by a bank manager in the valley at a stop light. Light went green I started to move and at same moment an LAPD cruiser went lights and siren as it crossed the intersection. I stepped on brakes, bam. Guy paid me in cash after I had damages checked out to not file insurance or police report. I bet this happens millions of times a year in the US alone.

I'm not sure they are going to win this. The car dealers aren't required to show them anything. They can choose to or not. I can demand that the car deal massage my balls. It doesn't mean they will.

The money they are spending on this lawsuit would be better used putting together an ad campaign pointing out the problems with Carfax and why they are not reliable.
