Are multiple formats viable anymore?
With the popularity of .mp4, which can play on pc, no prob, is it
even viable anymore to have .mp4, .mov, .wmv files? Seems like I'm just wasting server space at this point... what say you? |
I could play all those formats for 10 years on my PC, so I do not think they are necessary.
Unless it has to do with various sizes. |
mp4 and webm for html5 streaming is what we're moving to... for downloads, mp4...
|
thanks vdbucks!

.mp4 is a catch all for desktops and many mobile users, so I don't think all the others are needed. Perhaps if you're covering more mobile users you will need more options, but for desktops and the bulk of smart phone users, mp4 does it.

thanks DWB!

Do those formats work on Macs too?
|
yeah .mp4 is native to mac. even the apple site streams media in .mp4 now.
|
.mp4 for the win.
|
mp4 - never a customer issue.
|
.mp4 is pretty much the gold standard now... except for html5 streaming in firefox and opera (possibly other less popular browsers as well)... so if you're going to go with html5 streaming then you need mp4 + webm to cover most/all browsers...
ogv for older versions of opera/firefox as well but we find it not worth it since people can/should just upgrade their browsers... so we're sticking with mp4 + webm (starting with the launch of Trike Patrol's new design next week, then all of our sites over the next few months)... |
yeah guys, just want to save server space, and so far I totally agree.
|
I've been wanting to drop wmv for awhile now but many members still prefer that over mp4 for some reason.
|
Yeah all you need is mp4, works on Mac, PC, Android, iPhone, iPad, etc. so really no need for anything else.
|
mp4 here,
