Emmy Awards 2013: Michael Douglas criticizes U.S. prison system after giving incarcerated son Cameron Douglas shout out in acceptance speech

The ?Behind the Candelabra? star said he is questioning the system after being told he can't visit his son in prison. Cameron Douglas has been in prison since 2010, after being caught dealing heroin in New York.

Hollywood superstar Michael Douglas took home an Emmy for his acting ability Sunday night - but it was his frank criticism of the U.S. prison system that won raves.

Douglas, 68, who's battled throat cancer and now is separated from wife Catherina Zeta-Jones, said he's devastated that he's not being allowed to visit his oldest son Cameron Douglas, currently serving 10 years in federal prison for drug dealing.

The 35-year-old was sentenced to five years in 2010 after he was caught peddling heroin out of a New York hotel room. In 2011, he got another 4 1/2 years after he was caught with drugs in prison ? and according to his dad, he also got tossed into solitary confinement.

He got nabbed for using again in January, and was transferred from his low security facility in Pennsyvlania to a medium-security one in western Maryland, prison records show. Douglas and his ex-wife Diandra Luker, Cameron's mother, said they are not allowed to visit him in prison as part of his punishment.

"He's spent almost two years in solitary confinement. Right now I've been told that I can't see him for two years. It's been over a year now. And I'm questioning the system," Douglas said Sunday night backstage at the Emmys. He'd given his son a "shout out" moments earlier in his acceptance speech when he won an Emmy for his portrayal of Liberace for an HBO special.

"I'm hoping ... (they'll) allow me to see him soon," the dapper Douglas said.

Ok, so he gets busted selling heroin out of a New York hotel room. Understandable, could happen to anyone. (sarcasm) But it seems his real problem is he's stupid enough to get caught with drugs while in prison. Twice.

Sorry, I looked all over my house and am totally out of sympathy.

No sympathy for breaking the law -- but this war on drugs is stupid. Make it all legal and whoever wants to kill themselves with drugs will weed themselves out from the rest of us.

So we have drug laws because of the fear that addicts will kill for drug money?

Captain Kawaii 09-24-2013 12:38 PM

Maybe criminal behavior runs in the family.

yeah that would totally hold up in court..

xNetworx 09-24-2013 12:50 PM

Thats messed up that they won't let him see his family because of drugs. Its not like he brutally murdered somebody.

L-Pink 09-24-2013 12:55 PM

I'm by no means defending the prison or prison system but ? When you break a major law and you are already in prison there isn't much to do for immediate punishment. What do you take away? The only perk the guy had was visiting day so guess what?

alias 09-24-2013 01:03 PM

Hopefully he can smuggle the boy in some much needed heroin once they allow the visit.
