ARGH SNL!! Why do you let artists bullshit there way through live shows? Eminem

Did anyone watch Saturday Night Live yesterday?

Eminem performed his new song yesterday along with producer Rick Rubin (Billy Squire among others) as a DJ.

I'm no DJ but I know bullshit when I see it. The song has some really good live mixes and scratches in it and there's Rick Rubin who has to be in his 50's by now, DJ'ing up a storm. Or is he?

The Instrument Rubin is playing is called a CDJ-2000 (Virtual Turntables connected to a computer to let you play MP3's like a record). I've never owned one but a buddy does and they're fun to play with. Watching Rubin last night I noticed that he just seems to be doing it all wrong.

If you PVR'ed the show take another look and watch Rubin. Just tons of obvious and glaring mistakes. Why? Well despite a "live" 70's era record player to start the song, the rest of the hardware such as Pioneer CDJ is clearly not live (and upside down or at least setup at the wrong angle) as his hand motions never match the sound we hear.

I decided to Google it to see if I was just seeing things, but as it turns out I'm not the only one who say the bs.

You would think that SNL learned their lesson with the whole Ashley Simpson / Lip Sync scandal a few years ago.

You expect authenticity? Everything is staged, faked, inauthentic, contrived, and empty.

DWB 11-03-2013 02:14 PM

Who cares? Unlike most pop hacks these days who appear on TV, both Eminem and Rick Rubin are talented. So what if they use a back up track sometimes, cause both of them can handle their biz. TV is TV, it is what it is.

That said, Rubin's old ass very well may have been playing that shit sideways. Anything is possible. It's not like he doesn't know what he's doing.

SNL has been irrelevant for about 30 years. Does anyone still actually watch this crap?

bronco67 11-03-2013 03:17 PM

I was also wondering about the point of having a guitar player who is obviously not playing guitar. I feel bad for any music fans that attended the show that had to listen to that fucking stupidity. His rapping is a joke also. Never understood the appeal of that guy.

spunky99 11-03-2013 04:03 PM

okie so why cant u use a cdj sideway? i have yet to read anything that says u cant?

2MuchMark 11-03-2013 04:07 PM

The point is this.

For sure Rick Rubin is talented and influential on all music in the past 30 years, but I have to wonder what the motives are here. Rick Rubin is featured prominently in the video. Fine, no problem - other producers make appearances in their artists videos these days. All good there.

But now here is Eminarm doing a Live Performance, and there is Rubin, IN FRONT as if he's a featured artist of the band when clearly he is not.

So ok, we get it. He's the DJ, fine, but now watch at 2:54 for the breakdown. The DJ you hear is not Rubin. At first I thought they had another DJ in the back / right but they don't. The breakdown you hear is a part of a backtrack / recorded track.

Adding backtracks to live music is fine - I don't really care - but why have a completely fake "DJ"? Why have him right in front? And why is it Rubin?

To me it looks like he owns the rights to Billy Squire or something like that and said Eminem can use them IF he pays for and AND IF he features him (Rubin) in the Video AND IF he puts up on stage AND IF he is front and centre (or, left anyway)... Geeze.

I would hate to have your life and to spend all day, every day worrying about the most pathetic minutia. This is how we all know you don't have a growing business, a successful relationship and a happy home life.

Rubin is in the actual music video for this song, so it makes sense he would perform it with Eminem too. Plus, he just looks freaky.

Captain Kawaii 11-03-2013 05:32 PM

SNL has bigger problems than Rick and Marshall. Like shit writers and shittier actors.

420 11-03-2013 05:41 PM

The world would have cared if he came out and sang headlights and actually put some emotion into it. Instead he just goes through the motions and gives a half-ass performance of played out "new" songs. zzz

exzactly. i've always thought of it as an musical entertainment segment, not a concert. the live audience of snl is what ~200 peeps?? and most of those are friends of friends........
but the tv audience is what 10(s) million?

i mean if it's a glaring fuck-up like ashlee simpson et al, then it will get ridiculed, i kinda like it though, but generally speaking, it's the overall act that is enjoyable

That's a ridiculous statement. There are many bands and artists in many genres of music who only play live and would never lip sync or use backing tracks because they don't have to and because it would never even occur to them to be so lame.

Well, the name of the show is Saturday Night "LIVE".... and the people in the audience are introduced to a live act... and all of the other musicians are live... and Eminem is actually singing Live... and its Eminem's name and reputation....

If you were an artist who cared about perfecting your craft and entertain your audience, would you want to be tossed into the same category as Ashley Simpson? Or worse, Milly Vanilli?

So its ok to be lied to as long as you don't realize it? When is it ok to treat the audience like idiots?

again, i explained how i view the segment (it's not a concert), you are free to get upset about it. :1orglaugh
