Do you have Direct TV - save some cash!
I've had Direct TV for years, generally very happy with the service but it is a bit more expensive than the shitty cable companies.
I called them today and said I was "thinking" of switching to cable and they sent me to the retention department and got my bill lowered to $80 from $129 for 6 month and said I could just call back after the 6 months is up and do it again. 5 minutes - $300. And free starz and encore for 6 months. I wouldn't have switched to cable anyway, but nice to save some dough. Not quite Anal Hobbit level but worth 5 minutes. |
I would have demanded all of the porn channels as well

Yeah the old lady helping me would have appreciated that. |
you can do this with almost any recurring service not in contract
call them to cancel, wait a few days and they will call you back with substantial discount |

I just tried this with Verizon, but they weren't willing to budge. Problem is there are controls in place for pricing for service, so best they could do is offer me some $10 credit per month.
However, they are more than willing to rape you for DVRs. I have 4 boxes and a DVR, which costs me over $60/mo. my contract is up this month and then goes to over $90 for JUST cable boxes  Rather, I found I can use TiVO for a fraction of that. I already have a HD box with them, so if I buy one of their new Roamio boxes (which I get $100 off for being a 10+ year customer), they will give me the services for $6.95/mo for one and $9.95/mo for the other. I can setup streaming then to other TVs in my house without having multiple boxes. |

Glad to help :thumbsup They make enough money - what like 3 million customers at $100 per month.... |
Aren't you guys under contract with DirecTV? I'm paying $157 per month on DirecTV and I would love to get it lowered. Not sure if they'll do it if I signed a contract a year and a half ago.

Yeah, this is well known amongst DTV users, never pay full price. They don't want to take back your equipment and are willing to drop your rates to keep you as a customer. Only thing you have to be careful is that when they give you a new discount, generally a new 2 year contract starts at that point.(most don't realize they do this) So if you enjoy the flexibility of being off contract, don't get back on one unless the discount is steep. Also, its not always that easy to call back in 6 months and get the rates lowered again. If they put you on a new 2 year contract, they will not have as much incentive to give you another discount, since you'll have to pay penalties at that point to end your contract.

I've been out of contract for at least 2 years, and get some very good deals. We are not huge TV watchers outside of sports, and I get all sports channels that we need for our teams, the premier Sunday Ticket package and my other channels for $75 a month.
Of course "good deals" is relative. I'm old, so I remember when TV was 3 channels and an independent local, and was free. |
