Bookstores are a pleasure for me. In the past three used to be a lot of nerds, older housewives and hipsters in these stores. Now it's full of wealthier milfs, parents and creepy old hippies using it as a public library. Almost 100% white, but almost nobody buying. This in an upscale mall that was full of people in the apple store.

All the bookshops around here died.

I'm not sure if they all do, but our local B&N has a Starbucks cafe. My wife will sit there for hours sipping coffee and reading a stack of magazines -- none of which she'll buy, she just uses the place as a public library. She is not alone, there are always other folks there with a coffee, a pile of reading material, and no intention to buy anything else...

klinton 12-24-2013 07:31 AM

so what did you buy ;-)?

anexsia 12-24-2013 08:27 AM

The Barnes & Noble near me is ALWAYS busy...hell practically every store around the D.C area is busy as fuck right now.

It's much better to buy on their website or through Amazon though as you'll save a ton of money...Barnes & Noble always prices instore books at retail price and their books on their website at a decent discount from retail prices.

Technology is great but unfortunately eliminates a lot of old school hobbies/jobs in the process. :2 cents:

i prefer to read on my kindle fire now. However i still like to buy books for my bookshelf.

I own a shitload of books for my kindle but it sucks. You really dont own the books you have a license for use. I see that with college, you buy a textbook for your kindle you cant resell it. I also cant lend books to friends or family. But it is nice to have 100 books and they take up no room.

has zero to do with that, its just that most people can buy on amazon for a lot cheaper.

Years ago when I was a young pup I would spend countless hours in record shops looking for certain songs or groups that were hard to find. Even when we moved over to CD I would spend hours looking for stuff on my list. Now... No matter what it is, I can get it instantly streamed to my laptop or cell phone.

Much to my surprise my daughter wanted to go to a book store. Although we all have Kindles, she just wanted a book this time.

_Richard_ 12-24-2013 10:14 AM

always packed up here, but thats big box.. the smaller ones are having a hard time

I use it as a way to see and preview the book I want to buy then buy it off amazon. Most computer books in there cost $50 and up when u can get it online for way less. Lot of people use it as a showroom.

this store is a fucking joke!

I was just there yesterday and they refuse to match the price of the same item they have on their website. However, I can have it shipped to my house.

I called the girl out on it, then went to the register and asked. The woman working there said they won't do it because the prices are so low to compete with Amazon, however in person they are higher... then she jokingly said "what do you think pays our salaries?"

So, I left three books and a DVD set right there on the counter and left. Bought it all on Amazon and saved $40, plus will be here today and wrapped.

Its only a matter of time before those stores are closed and turned into a Halloween costume shop.

No regrets?

I have fond memories of cruising the men's room at Barnes and Nobles.

Had a lot of hot times in stalls there.
