New Years on the Vegas Strip
I did it once before, many years ago and swore I'd never do it again.
I think it was 2002 or 2003 and the security was over the top. There were portable gun towers every 100 yards or so all up and down the strip. "Gunship" choppers flying overhead too. Many of the casinos wouldn't let you in the door unless you were staying there. Those that would let you in were not allowing backpacks in the building and body cavity searches seemed to be in full force. The street was closed down except for a single lane on both sides so the center lanes could be used for the sharp shooters, cops, and EMS. It sucked. However, my Wife has never been on the Strip for New Years so I'm considering taking her there tonight. Have any of you done this in the last few years? If so, have they lightened up at all or is it still treated like the old Berlin Wall? |
i spent 2004/2005 in Fremont street, that was fun.
live bands, the mayor held a speech, great light show on the roof screen thingy |
i was thinking to come since Calvin Harris plays and it will be epic, but getting babysitter is like mission impossible tonight. Going to westlake village instead

Wasn't there some sort of bomb threat in Vegas at that point ? I seem to remember watching it on the tv in the Venetian hotel room. I guess that was why it was so over the top that year. But yeah it did indeed suck. Surely it isn't like that most years... |

Yep, I'm pretty sure you were with us that night. Not sure about a bomb threat though. I was under the impression it was a post 9-11 thing. Not sure if it's tamed down since then or not...Hence this thread. :winkwink: |
Worst part about vegas on the strip is when you have a take a piss and wait in the huge ass lines.

Why spend the holiday in a strip??? Go to the casino.. your in vegas..

Spent 4 winters in Vegas and never made it to the strip for NYE. Hate crowds. |

Ruined any illusions I had of the party in Vegas -- try and have a good time there. Hopefully it's not so grim this year. |

I did it once with my wife and she had a near panic attack because when it was over all the people packed like sardines started going in every direction and we couldnt move. Never again. Downtown is better. Staying home this year though.
But when we went it wasnt like you described. Just cops on horseback and you can go into any of the casinos. |

They take Newbies on the strip now ? Where the fuck this world is coming to ? :Oh crap ... lol ... Happy New Year Aaron with your lovely wife (on the strip or not). Miss your silly ass at shows.. Hope to see you soon :thumbsup |
I went down in 2009. It was packed, but I had allot of fun. They did still basically close the strip completely to traffic from Tropicana to around Desert Inn. Middle blocked by barricades with police in the middle so you have to cross at main cross streets. It was a fun experience, but I like the Mardi Gras party crowd kind of thing. (Everybody needs to do it once.)
Best bet is to figure out where the activities you want to see and do are and park and enter from the casino that is closest to that point on the strip. It is quite slow to move from place to place once you are out on the strip due to the crowd. |
Pro Tip: save your room keys and build a collection... Helps for stuff like getting into casinos on NYE when they are only allowing guests. Also handy if a particular casino's pool is open to guests only.
Pro Tip addendum: Wynn players club cards are identical to their room keys. |

Pro Tip addendum II: Mandalay Bay scans the keys when entering the pool area. If it's an inactive key, they will catch it. :2 cents: |
