Modifying this plugin to work with categories and taxonomies?

This plugin looks really handy. It'd be nice to be able to modify it so that you could have one to do tags, one to do categories, and one for each of your custom taxonomies. Can anyone well versed in this stuff determine if it's just a matter of switching a few bits to get it working with different post types?
