Seen This? eBay Hacked - Database Stolen

This is a pretty big hack by the looks of it.

Ebay are saying every user should change their password after the database potentially containing 223 million user details was hacked.

Quote:

Ebay's announcement that a database holding the personal details of users ? potentially all 223 million worldwide ? was hacked raises a number of serious questions.

It's the biggest reported hack ever in terms of the number of people affected, but does not affect financial data, which is stored separately.

Q: Do I need to change my eBay password?

A: Yes. eBay is recommending this to all users.

Q: But I just changed it a few weeks ago when all the Heartbleed stuff was happening. Do I really need to?

A: eBay says that it discovered the hack about two weeks ago, and that it happened between "late February and early March". If you haven't changed your password since then, you should.

Q: What data was stolen?

A: eBays says that the database with users' customer names, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth was breached. It hasn't said how much of that data was copied. It's best to assume that it all was.

The article says, that: Online marketplace eBay is forcing users to change their passwords after a cyber-attack compromised its systems.

But I can login with my old password and everything works like before

And I logged on yesterday for the first time in a month and of course had to use my password. The password is 10 years old, worked without a problem. I've NOT received any communications from ebay.

That is fucking strange. Companies forced to change passwords for way smaller threats, even for just suspicions of threats. And this looks like confirmed case of stolen email passwords. Something doe snot add up.

dyna mo 05-21-2014 02:34 PM

I'm sure there will be an ebay fee I'll be assessed for the hack.

Rochard 05-21-2014 02:45 PM

Jesus fucking Christ this shit is getting old people...

armysmoke 05-21-2014 02:51 PM

I just logged into my ebay account with no problems.

Rochard 05-21-2014 02:57 PM

Ebay is asking its users to reset their passwords due to the unauthorized access to our corporate information network. This may result in a delay of service due to the high traffic volume. We ask for your patience and that you return to eBay soon. In the meantime, please be assured that no activity can occur on your account until your password is reset.

I wonder if they stored the passwords encrypted with "salt".
If so then the hackers will have to unencrypt passwords and this will slow them down big time.

.

afoo 05-21-2014 05:13 PM

The passwords were most likely salted, if you had a weak password, blame yourself

SiMpLe 05-21-2014 05:13 PM

This is going to be great for sales this week! :disgust :disgust :disgust

Spunky 05-21-2014 05:34 PM

Has anyone been able to successfully change their password recently? I keep getting a technical error message as well. Been like that for a week. What a joke!

PornDiscounts-V 05-26-2014 06:55 AM

I knew about this back in February when I purchased part of the database.

seeandsee 05-26-2014 06:59 AM

IMPORTANT: PASSWORD UPDATE

Dear eBay Member,

To help ensure customers' trust and security on eBay, I am asking all eBay users to change their passwords.

Here's why: Recently, our company discovered a cyberattack on our corporate information network. This attack compromised a database containing eBay user passwords.

What's important for you to know: We have no evidence that your financial information was accessed or compromised. And your password was encrypted.

JA$ON 05-26-2014 10:27 AM

If they got emails AND any sort of buying history, that is WITHOUT QUESTION, the most valuable list for spamers that could be nabbed.

That is going to generate someone north of 50 million dollars. Crazy

editeur 05-26-2014 10:58 AM

I wonder if the passwords were encrypted or hashed? Because if they were encrypted and they lost the key with the data... this is going to be bad regardless of the passwords quality.
