First National Guard troops at Texas-Mexico border

The first wave of National Guard troops has taken up observation posts along the Texas-Mexico border.

Texas National Guard Master Sgt. Ken Walker of the Joint Counterdrug Task Force says "several dozen" soldiers deployed in the Rio Grande Valley are part of the up to 1,000 troops called up by Gov. Rick Perry last month.

Several Guardsmen were seen Thursday afternoon manning an observation tower along the busy road leading to the Hidalgo International Bridge.

Walker says this first batch has been specifically trained to man observation towers in the area belonging to local law enforcement agencies and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. They will serve as extra eyes on the border and report suspicious activity to authorities.

State officials have estimated the deployment will cost $12 million per month

About fucking time. The US should make this entire border a military zone and be done with it. Free training for our troops.

Sending several dozen men to "observe" a 2000 mile border is at least saner than expecting them to stop anyone from crossing.

So did he call these soldiers to active duty forcing people to leave their lives for what is nothing more than a political stunt.. or is he getting them on their "two weeks a year" standard service?

If it's the first, it's a pretty shitty move, to pull national guard away from their families and regular jobs, so the state Governor can play politics on the tax payer's dime.

National Guard for children who are giving themselves up to Border Patrol? Sounds like he's playing to his fear mongering base. Perry is a fucking tool. Have you ever heard him speak? Hard to believe he made it into an elected office.

There is NO actual border and the "wall" is a joke. :1orglaugh

If you have ever been to Texas you know that there are entire towns where you can easily and freely move from Mexico to the US and visa versa with no check points or barriers.

This is all a smoke screen people wake up and smell the bullshit!

It's typical pre-election hoopla from the GOP.. Every 4 years they start making a big deal out of illegal immigration soon as the elections near..

Once the elections are over, all those Texan ranchers go back to working their illegals on the ranches and suddenly forget to be outraged until the next election gets close.

It's like clock work.. The true outrage should be how the Republicans keep wasting tax dollars on these political stunts.

Did someone hold a gun to their fucking heads and force them to join the National Guard?

This is how it works. You sign up, you get called up, you do your job. It's not a god damned game.

woj 08-15-2014 05:36 AM

it's all kinda pointless, a political stunt like some have said earlier... so they catch a few, put them on a bus back to Mexico, then as soon as the guy gets off the bus he goes north again at a different location to try again... :1orglaugh

so extra 12M/month gets pissed away, and in reality nothing gets accomplished...

Matt 26z 08-15-2014 10:36 AM

They are trying to establish Texas as an unsafe place for illegals to cross, forcing them to go through Arizona, New Mexico and California instead. If Texas spends less on border patrol than it does on illegal residents (namely education and welfare costs), it'll be a success.

The media will have you believe it's masses of children flooding the border, but the reality is that the vast majority are adults. There has merely been a surge in the number of central American children crossing compared to normal (thanks to Mexico for giving them a 48 hour pass to travel through the country).

The teens coming from central America are looking for asylum. Then their parents will join them and not have to worry about deportation because the US does not deport the illegal caretakers of a US citizen or anyone here legally.

WDF 08-15-2014 11:37 AM

Political Grandstanding at it's best.

"We are spending 12mil/month to protect the border and Obama does nothing!" type shit.

Ross 08-15-2014 11:38 AM

Where do they get these insane figures, $12 million per month... is it the entire US army they have on the border??

crockett 08-15-2014 07:07 PM

Oh Snap!..

Texas Governor Rick Scott, whom abuses his power to call the national guard to duty for a political stunt was indited by a grand jury, for.. you guessed it.. "abuse of power" in a unrelated event.

Seems the good Republican governor used his position of power, to veto funding for state prosecutors whom were investigating public corruption..

Humm no wonder he was making a big hoopla over immigration and using the National Guard as a political tool.. He was trying to over shadow his soon to be released bad news.. What timing he has to make a big deal out of immigration with his dog and pony show..
