Yep, I've been using Uber for years, almost since it first launched.
You are supposed to sit in back, however in places where Uber may not be openly welcome (like Las Vegas), or where they are doing a pickup where they are not supposed to (like the airport), they will make it a point to ask you to sit up front so it just looks like you are some regular person being picked up by your friend / family. Those are the last bastions of taxi strongholds who have the politicians paid and don't want competition.
I wouldn't let it dissuade you. Taxis suck ass and are obsolete. Well worth it to use the service. They're cheaper, there's more accountability and its an overall better experience. Don't think a lot of cabbies could make it on Uber, and actually care about the customer experience.

P.S. I remember the good old days where if you used a CC in a cab, they'd curse at you, especially if it was a low fare. Since then, many cabbies have CC machines that rip you off with a CC fee. Here in Vegas think its $3, while a glaring Ipad of Steve Wynn annoys you over and over again. They will never learn...
