The New York Police Department will no longer arrest people simply for possessing small amounts of marijuana, Commissioner Bill Bratton announced Monday. Instead, individuals will be ticketed and fined.

Beginning on November 19, the new policy will apply to people who are found with 25 grams of cannabis or less. As long as they are not smoking the marijuana, intending to sell it, or have an outstanding warrant for their arrest, police officers can simply issue a civil summons, similar to a parking ticket, and move on.

However, those wanted by police in connection with ongoing investigations, as well as those who fail to produce identification, can still be arrested.

Under the new rules, the first ticket would cost violators $100, while a second one would hike the price up to $250.

?This new policy will reduce unnecessary arrests for minor marijuana possession and put an end to an era where many of young New Yorkers were being arrested and saddled with criminal records for minor violations,? said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

i know for a fact that since the mid 90's nypd officers were told by superiors NOT to arrest people for Marijuana is all it did was clog the system with misdemeanor arrests. One nyp officer told me if you walked into the precinct with a kid and a cpl dime bags not only would you be laughed at by your peers but the sarge would be fucking pissed to..this "new approach" is really is just the beggining of hillarys run for the white house wich will be heavly based on legalizing marijauna on a federal level

Which has been the law in New York State for 37 years.

Still a good deal. Still less than the price of an ounce in NY. Even at 250$.

They need to knock this shit off and make pot legal already. Tax it and make money from it.

Instead of costing them money it is now a money maker, a win / win.

The cops around here don't even bother with the tickets. They just take what you have on you home and smoke it themselves.

That shit is crazy, I remember back in the early 90's there used to be pot fests at washington square park and nobody gave a shit. Guiliani came in office after Dinkiness and fucked everything up. I think this a step in the right direction. IMO
