Opencart vs Woocommerce
 

So we have used Woocommerce in the past and are very happy with the results we have had, the flexibility of the plugin and how user friendly it is. However, we haven't used Opencart so I'm wondering if we are missing out on a true ecommerce platform with benefits Woocommerce doesn't have/offer.

Any Adult Toy Store guys have success stories with Opencart or any other ecommerce software they want to share?

Here is what I'm really interested in:

1. Is Opencart SEO friendly (more so than Woocommerce?)
2. Does Opencart have standard ecommerce functionality such as abandon cart features, etc built in where as woocommerce needs a plugin?
3. Which platform is better suited for a long term ecommerce site which would need to be scaled from 500 products to 15,000 products?
4. How are the page load times when comparing the two if the specs of the server and themes were very similar?

Some other options are Volusion and BigCommerce but would rather have an open source solution. Magento is out of the question...

how about Shopify?

I think you have to basically partner with Shopify if you choose them. They take a percentage for their transaction fee. If you only use their merchant processing which is the route most will go, you will have to pay 2.9% plus .30 cents each transaction (depending on the membership level). I know what you're thinking though, one would have to pay a processing fee to a merchant processor either way right? Well, yes but there is a caveat.

See if you have a Shopify site and use their merchant processing plus want to offer PayPal as a payment option, you have to pay an additional percentage over the amount PayPal charges you to Shopify. This could end up adding up much more than one would want once their business starts growing. I have heard good things about Shopify but that aspect of it kills the deal for me. Volusion or Bigcommerce are a better (similar) solution vs Shopify in my honest opinion.

Why is Magento out? Any specific reason (I've heard mixed reviews, so just curious)?

Magento is too resource intensive, too complicated and not the easiest solution for under 1000 SKU's. It is probably the best if you know what you are doing with it and can afford the server but most would agree that there are better solutions for smaller applications. Magento, from what we understand, is a great enterprise solution if you have 20,000+ SKU's.

Magento used to have a light version called "Magento Go" but they decided to get rid of it a little while ago.

Anybody compare vulnerabilitiies and support levels of this software solutions ?

If you happy with Woocommerce why you want to change it? We use WC and still very very happy. It runs smooth, easy to handle. We had another before. Didn't remember maybe Opencart. It was very complicated.

And I love the Bitcoin plugins in WC

Take a look at FoxyCart FoxyCart: A Shopping Cart Platform for Custom Ecommerce I have mainstream clients with them and they were all very happy.

woocommerce is not bad, I did not work for long with it but so far so good.

AmeriCommerce is where BigCommerce customers are going to since BC will not get with the times and actually offer what the customers want. AC was recently purchased by CapOne and a bunch of fundage put into the platform to make it the nest solution.

I used Magento when I first started and that system used massive amounts of server resources to run that I had to move one of our stores twice before I switched to ZenCart for awhile but it to was dated. BigCommerce has promised alot but delivered features that customers would never of asked for, their CEO took his Golden JetPack and said adios a few months ago. It is a tough market right now so you just have to go with your gut and give it a try.

I don't think that this is good idea to make eShop on Wordpress. I know people who created eShop using Woocommerce plugin and they stucked when they tried to customize some modules there! But if you were happy and had no problems with Woocommerce, it's good :)

Absolutely agree with you. Magento is too intensive and I think it's quite difficult, if you're newbie.

We've been using opencart on many of our sites for years now and were considering woocommerce as a possible alternative recently. We opted to stay with and upgrade to the latest opencart and keep our commerce/shop side of things separate from our main site, which is a WordPress setup. When thinking infrastructure of the site, we thought it best not to embed the eCommerce part directly into WordPress for fear that a WP upgrade, theme upgrade or some weird plugin or something might fuck with our shop functionality.

Anyway, that is what it came down to for us when comparing woo to OC. Both seem like great approaches, but for peace of mind and site stability we are with opencart.

If you have straight hands, it doesn't matter which one you will use!

I wouldn't recommend Shopify or Opencart.

For a scalable adult toy store site like jimmyjane - You need to have a technically strong platform build on a solid tech framework.

You can either go with PHP or Ruby on rails.
