Content: Should it be downloadable or not?

Been running my sites for almost twenty years now and my content has almost always been downloadable. A few years ago I followed the trend and made it streaming only, but after a lot of complaints from people incapable of streaming, I reverted back to downloadable.

Now that technology is pretty much up to speed on streaming, does anyone have any anecdotes about whether I should go back to streaming only again? Do you think it would help retention? Sales? Etc?

Thanks in advance for any input.

why not have both?

blinki bill 12-24-2014 03:14 AM

I would say it depends on your audience, what age they are, are they caught up on new tech or have slow connection, old tech etc... also how well can you servers handle streaming, particularly in peak times

seeandsee 12-24-2014 04:28 AM

stream it!

You really think computers do anything but copy? Nevermind the internet for a moment..

SBJ 12-24-2014 04:50 AM

I do both.. I stream with html5 and offer wmv for download since all my old vids were wmv.

SmutHammer 12-24-2014 12:38 PM

As a paysite owner I would love for it to be streaming only, But I always try to look at user experience and put my members first. If I joined a website and could not download I'd be upset and charge back.

The Porn Nerd 12-24-2014 01:04 PM

Offering both is the easy answer BUT it REALLY depends on your content (the size of your vids, quality, HD, etc), and it does take up a LOT of server resources. Switching to a stream-only server would help but that's extra $$$.

So I do downloads. I know everyone wants their shit NOW (streaming) but a Membership is, at the least, 30 days so plenty of time for Mems to revisit and download. It helps them stick around. For those who want streaming and get frustrated, well....it's a balancing act at best.

Good luck!

SmutHammer 12-24-2014 01:35 PM

huh... I would have thought every website offered streaming now a days. Just thought the question was weather or not give downloads as well.

Diomed 12-24-2014 11:39 PM

If I paid for a membership I would want access to the content on my hard drive for sure.

I only ever joined one porn site and that was jennahaze.com because of some new exclusive scenes and I used to be a fan.

My credit card was banged to all hell and back. The only time in my life I ever got random charges from weird fucking places within days of joining.

Never bought a membership again.

What in the hell are you talking about? Server resources... that shit sounds like an excuse to NOT do something a partner of yours may have recommended. But I have no idea what that may be because can't for the life of me understand what in the shit you just wrote.

You simply offer downloadable content in a download link... streaming is streaming. Yo shit is going to get stolen anyways so you better have a plan to create a lot of content if you want to be competitive. And servers are cheap, cheap, cheap... especially for sites that have downloadable/streaming content BEHIND alexa 1+mill paysites :2 cents:

Nah... you go away. How's your five year plan working out?

See, what you should be doing is crunching all your numbers. As soon as you could not understand that 3 new sales per day could be worth 100K/year is the second I realized that you are way over your head. Accounting wise, partner wise, site wise, etc.

How the fuck do you think that by adding 10 more "partner" sites (or 20) to your portfolio with the same god damn traffic that would = more $?

Who the fuck are you, why the fuck do you care, you show repeatedly you know NOTHING about me, my business, my success or ANY damn thing, and as far as I am concerned you are a new nick troll so FUCK OFF.

Which websites do you run?

I run just a measly old site which is making 4 digits after 2 months and will break through 5 digits monthly likely by February of 2015.

I'm just the person you like to shit on occasionally with your stories and threads of unsuccessful... ness. Here you go...

"What a waste of time and memory."

See, when you shit on your "acquaintances", or people that are "non-biased/somewhat-friendly" you then create enemies.

And your statement in this thread is fucking retarded. Streaming costs no money, downloading costs no money. The only fucking question is if the downloading hurts your business and I will say no. Reason being, if your shit is worth stealing, it will be stolen.

The answer is to produce more content or just crawl in your cave... or provide a service which theft is not a problem.

I've done streaming only on my pay sites for probably close to 4-5 years now. I have yet to get a single complaint through the members emails. That being said, for a PREMIUM they can purchase a clip through our C4S store if they like, which many do. However, many already did this before we went streaming only, even years ago. They must purchase enough scenes from C4S they trust them to never bang their card, and that is their preference. Which is fine by me. It's more profitable return for each clip between C4S + pay site ROI.

Same here. Sites better write in big letters if they don't allow people to download content.

If they don't mention download on their tour or product description it should be clear that members can't expect that. But for some reasons even review sites get that wrong.

Alice22 12-26-2014 10:33 PM

We offer both.

While you are technically right, reality is just another. Since the beginning, all websites with a very few exceptions have offered downloadable content. Not necessarily zip files, but you could still save content. This is what people have grown used to and expect.

So to avoid pissing of customers, it's any site's job to tell surfer what product he is buying. This goes for any business, and specially if you offer a much limited experience compared to what have become the norm.

With all the piracy today and tubes giving everything away for free, we will probably see more sites limiting their members to streaming, and making it a hell for them to keep any pictures.
Until this is common practice, IMO it is still the minority who should make clear what they offer, and especially what they don't.

Treat your costumers as it was yourself.
