Rio de Janeiro on New Years Eve

Has anyone been to Rio over New Years?

I know there are millions of people.

I guess one of my concerns is safety. Any tips or recommendations would be appreciated.

do not walk with too much cash :thumbsup

pimpmaster9000 12-28-2014 04:13 PM

do not go to the favellas or deep in the beach during the night and do not carry 2000$ cameras and iphones and you will be fine...wearing just a tshirt and shorts lets them see you have nothing worth stealing on you and you will be left alone

brassmonkey 12-28-2014 04:29 PM

i saw a pic of a guy passed out dry blood big gash across his face :helpme it was nasty. google images sometimes drops these easter eggs in searches that have nothing to do with gore :disgust

Yes, I have been there for New Years and it is quite mellow actually. Everyone is drinking of course (and smoking) but walking to meet at Copacabana beach to watch the fireworks display that is setup off shore that starts at midnight and goes on for about 15 minutes.

People wear all white so I recommend that to not stand out as a tourist. Don't carry around a lot of cash and just blend in as you should since you are there to ring in the new year along with 2 million others.

You will never forget it - have fun!

Sounds like fun!

Or anything flashy like watches, jewelry etc.

I had a relative who was killed on the beach there over a necklace.

I heard there is wave of thieves line up along the sand and rob everyone in a lightning quick operation that is in and out.

I experienced the 'shit on the shoe scam' in Rio. As i walked out from hotel during day after 5 min walking some old guy pointed at my flip flops and it looked like mustard or bird shit. He started to clean and i told him its okey i'll do it myself. When he gived back, he wanted like 30$-100$ i'm like here is 5$ and walked away.

Don't get killed CAHEK

Pipecrew 12-29-2014 07:29 PM

They are only focusing on killing Russians and Ukrainians these days in rio. You should be fine

fappingJack 12-29-2014 07:36 PM

Do not wear anything which attracts snatchers. And do not bring expensive gadgets.

That happens to every tourist in Rio. If you went to Rio and didn't happen you didn't get the true experience.

It is also the oldest trick in the book and those who fall for it deserve it get robbed. :thumbsup

I lived there for a year and found that there are more scan artists in L.A. or NYC by far than Rio.

Rio is more petty crimes of opportunity. Most tourist are stupid and deserve to get robbed and/or scammed. :1orglaugh

Be safe, Happy New Year CAHEK. :pimp
