Husband: Mom shot teaching daughter to drive may not live

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A mother teaching her 14-year-old daughter to drive was shot in the head and was not expected to survive after an apparent road-rage attack by an angry driver who followed them to their Las Vegas home, the woman's husband said Friday.

"This was a loving mother of four kids teaching our daughter how to drive," Robert Meyers told The Associated Press before addressing reporters outside the home where Tammy Meyers was shot about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

"After I turn off the machines to my wife today ... we've got to do something to take our city back," he said. "Every time you turn around, someone is getting shot."

Las Vegas police later released a written statement saying Tammy Meyers argued after a "near-collision" with a male driver of the other car.

The statement said no suspects had been identified, no clear description of the vehicle was available, and the release of more information might jeopardize the case.

Robert Meyers told reporters that Tammy Meyers, 44, was driving home after letting her daughter take the wheel of the family's green Buick Park Avenue in a nearby school parking lot when a silver four-door sedan that had been following them passed and hit the brakes.

Tammy Meyers steered around the car and continued driving home. Meyers said she sent their youngest daughter into the house before the shooting. He described the girl as emotionally distraught.

Meyers said their adult son emerged from their house and fired several shots with a handgun at the fleeing car. He told his father there were three people in the car.

Robert Meyers, 49, said he was in Los Angeles on business when the shooting occurred. He said he believed the two cars crashed at some point. The Buick had slight damage to molding on the passenger side.

Meyers also said he thinks at least one 9mm shot by his 23-year-old son hit the fleeing car, and he called for the people involved to surrender to police.

11:30 p.m. is not a good to for a kids to be learning to drive.

If only the mother or daughter had a gun they could of defended themselves. This is Obama's fault!

Not trying to argue with you. Just i think evening after most other cars are off the road is indeed a good time to learn to drive.

I am happy the son came out to defend his mother, I guess he will be living that moment over again and again in his head for his life. Wishing he had stopped it before it happened.

Unfortunately, you're probably right.

Tragic situation.

I don't know about the whole sequence of events here ... Dad's out of town so mom takes the daughter who is at least a year or more to young to get a permit to a local school at 11:30 pm to illegally drive the car. Then it ends with the son firing shots at a fleeing car that end up landing where?

Something doesn't quite jive.

The son had time to get the handgun, load it...get out the door...assess and comprehend the situation...and fire off a few rounds?

Something odd with the story.

Yep, sounds a bit odd. They hit another car and kept going and who then follows them home and shoots her.

Tough neighborhood.

A citizen executes a fleeing felon when their life is not in danger.

That is not justified homicide.
