WWW in movies and literature
How hard is to find an average webmaster to read the script and tell them that the computer part of the story is bullshit?
Last week I saw that Scandinavian TV series Bron/Boern (Bron/Broen (TV Series 2011? ) - IMDb) and while it's very solid show, the Internet part is complete disaster. Complete disaster. There's a serial killer that streams stuff on a .dk (or was it .se, not sure) domain name and the computer guy in Malmö police says "we can't do anything to truck him down, his web site IP address is hidden" :1orglaugh Now I'm halfway S. King's Mr. Mercedes and the IT part is screwed up too Spoils the whole thing for me, can't watch or read the rest with same pleasure :Oh crap |
Independence Day - although it's nearly impossible to write a virus that can affect both PC's and Macs - Jeff Goldblum can upload a virus to an alien operating system and bring down its shields.
And any movie where they zoom in on a grainy security cam footage - press a magical 'enhance image' button...and make it all extremely clear. That drives me insane. |
The reason with most of these things is because if the IT stuff was accurate it would kill the story.

It's called "TV". It's all fake.

I'm pretty sure that's the case with other professions too (doctors, police etc), we just simply don't know :) The same way a doctor can't tell if the IT stuff is real or not (eg IP tracking).

in Mr. Mercedes, to fuck with the hero of the book the serial killer uses extra private chat web site that is so advanced that screen goes blank if you try to take a screenshot :1orglaugh
the web site is based in Olovo, Bosnia http://www.cs.unca.edu/~boyd/touring...ay06/olovo.jpg i guess if it's in the hills it's harder to spy on it :1orglaugh |
They call it fiction ...

I think we're referring to the latter here. |
how about wire transfers with progress bar, the power goes off and the bad guys get only the half of the ransom amount lol
|
because most of movie makers still think viewers are plain dumb :1orglaugh so its okay to introduce the subject as science fiction but many of this guys forget they are pretty not up to date .
