July 1st - Supressors will be legal in MN

Most people know them from the movies as Silencers. The technical term though is a suppressor.

MN was 1 of a handful of states left that had them outlawed. Suppressors are not easy to obtain and you must apply for a federal tax stamp through the ATF along with a $200 application fee for each one. Approval takes anywhere from 6-10 months depending on how backed up they are.

I have 2 applications in right now. 1 for an SBR 300 blackout (similar to the one below). Because it is an SBR or a Short Barreled Rifle (under 16 inches), I was forced to go and get a special federal tax stamp similar to what's needed for the suppressor.

the other is for a 22 pistol.

Most of you are going to ask, why would you need a suppressed rifle?

Well, the reason why it passed by both Dems and Repubs in the state and then was ultimately signed off on by a Democratic govener was - They brought in a lot of old school hunters. Guys who hunted both large and small game their whole lives. They all had one thing in common. Pretty substantial hearing loss.

My father is also a hunter and is 69 years old. He can't hear shit now either. As a hunter myself, I am trying to hopefully avoid being deaf by the time I'm his age.

Suppressors are as just as easy to obtain, in most states, as a handgun. They just take a bit longer for the paperwork to process through.

Congrats on your state now allowing them. Get yourself an AAC SDN-6 for the 300BLK.

How can you hear the game if your ears are plugged? Or if another hunter is in the area?

If somebody breaks into my house, I could fumble around looking for earplugs...Or....I could show some respect for my family and neighbors who may not wish be alarmed by gun fire.

Yep, that would be insanely stupid to wear earplugs out in the woods while hunting.

I personally like the loud "bang", but a lot of people don't and many of them shoot all the time (which I haven't shot my shotgun in 7 years) & don't want to lose their hearing.

Besides only professional hitmen use a silencer to kill people. :pimp

Agreed here. Can't you fire with ear protection? A suppressor just seems like an excuse to have more people get killed by guns... quietly.

Really? Did you just post that? :1orglaugh

You've been watching too much Sons of Anarchy.

Exactly.

The last thing I need is for somebody to wake up, wonder what that noise was and stumble into a gunfight. :BangBang:

The only thing I found a pain in the ass was setting up the trust and sending the lower off to be engraved. Now that its done though it's smooth sailing. Just the waiting game.

Often times I will hear the doe/buck well before I see them. I also need to see if my calls are being answered. Twigs snapping, them grunting or even breathing heavily can not be heard with ear protection on.

I'm guessing you filed physical paperwork? If so, consider filing electronically next time. It cuts the time down to 1/3-1/2....Unless their systems breaks which has been known to happen from time to time.

If someone breaks into my house I don't give a fuck about alarming my family and friends. I care about protecting them.

That said, I don't care if people have suppressors or not. If they want one, cool.

Agreed.
Or a person calling out and then getting shot because you couldn't hear that it was a person.

Anybody in this thread babbling about wearing ear plugs anyplace but a gun shooting range didn't think it through.
The last thing you want is someone who can't hear anything walking with a loaded gun through the woods hunting.
