I went to college while studying to get a degree in Electrical Engineering. The school gave us lots of tools, and also gave each of us a large "metal suitcase" similar to what you would carry camera gear in. And we built.... Stuff just like this clock. We mounted circuits on circuit boards with lights to make logic gates and what not.... Looked exactly like this.

Then again, that was long before 9/11.
