I have several sets of video goggles here for FPV flying drones with, but nothing like an Oculus Rift. I'm dying to try that technology.

it took me a while to find a used one, whenever one came online it was sold an hour later and on Ebay they sold for 500 ? instead of the original price of 300? or 350?

A friend got it on first round. Wasn't really impressed. I tried the roller coaster as that was pretty much the only thing out then. To me it just just seemed like a 3d movie within a pair of goggles. Grant it it was cool and all to be able to look around the "movie" but I really didn't "feel" it so to speak. Chicks were falling out of the chair and shit, not really sure why.. I guess bad equilibrium? Or maybe it's just me...

To understand VR, you have to try it. No words can explain it.

Be aware that you can try it with Google Cardboard that is as cheap as 3.50 via ebay but the field of view is rather narrow and the display of a smartphone is not really up to par for what is needed for the true feeling of being inside the video.

Samsung will be releasing a new smartphone just for VR sometime in the spring /16 that is closer to a i5 computer that should do the trick quite nicely. But pretty great results can be obtained with Samsung GearVR if you have a note5 or galaxy 6/p now. Consumer version is to be at best buy before black friday.

Oculus Rift (cv1), HTC Vive will be the first 2 consumer HMD's out within the next few month's. Both should have two fast 2k display's (one for each eye).
Stereoscopic 3D is not required but needed for full immersion.
Watching older 3D flicks is great with a VR Goggle.

Oculus just quit selling the DK2. That is why they are selling used on ebay like hotcakes for twice the money. Have to wait for the retail product now.

the consumer version will come out next year and probably cost about $400

and you need a fast computer, i noticed my laptop cannot really handle it

I tried it with virtual real porn. Wasn't impressed at all with the whole concept they / adult is going with for vr.

I'd prefer a good 4k video on a big 4k monitor anyday. It was grainy and the head gear was clumbsy.

But that was on a dk2. Mayne later models and content will be better...

Some of the videos are captured in PANO-SPHERIC (have no top and bottom cams)
like the Google/GoPro cam,
and some are OMNI-SPHERIC ( a true 360 sphere minus the camera mount area).

The other part that separates video quality for immersion purposes is whether they are 3D.
It's a lot of data to digest for VR purposes and some of the first thoughts you might have about the VR camera quality as far as pixels needed to show a high res image are thrown out the window.
At any one time you will never be viewing more than 1/4 of a sphere .
So if you want a 1080P quality image in that area, you are going to need a omnispheric camera that captures a a 4k omni image.
A 2k omni image is pretty good but not great. More like watching a 640P/720P video.
It can be possible to see the spaces between the pixels depending on the cam & display.

We should see some good consumer cams in about a year.
Prices could be a bit steep because of all the ccd imagers and a processor on-board to stitch them all together rapidly.

Not sure about that. Couple of players have been making money all year with just cardboard , mobile adapters and Oculus Dev Kits.
Many existing machines may only need a new Graphics card. But you can't change that on a Laptop.

Within 5 months, and the true HMD's are out, and even Apple enters this game, it will be content that makes or breaks the tech.

I think when folks start watching the NFL, NHL and NBA with them next year, it will be a done deal for many depending on how well delivered.

The SVR Glass does as well as a GearVR and costs about $65 (pretty nice) and not limited to Samsung phones as well as DesTek 3D VR at $40 (or less)
The next gen of smartphones/2016 should have faster GPU's and will change everything.

I watch the venture capital and it is flowing to VR content providers as we speak.

the good thing is: VR content makes almost zero sense on tubes due to the high bitrate you need for good quality. File lockers and torrents are more easy to monitor
