TV with ambilight, anyone has one?

Hi!

I'm planning to ditch my full HD TV and get a 4K capable next years, is ambilight worth the extra money?

What is an Ambilight?

Probably not all that great unless you watch TV in the dark only. Seems gimmicy to me. That and I would never buy a Philips TV.

I think it looks cool but the biggest drawback I see is you have to buy a Phillips tv. If I was in the market for a 4k tv I probably wouldn't be looking at Phillips as my first choice, although they aren't bad tvs by any means.

if it doesn't fit up inside my bottom... then i'm simply NOT interested....

My preferred brand for TVs ATM is Samsung, however I'm pretty sure I can live with an other one too :)

Honestly if you're asking if its worth it, its because you don't see the value in it yourself. Stick with a better brand TV without the gimmics

It would be alright "Sometimes" can you turn it off?

Don't do it. You pay a lot of money for something that you can do yourself. Do this: Shop around for the best TV in your price range (Best picture, etc). Then go to the hardware store and buy those ribbon LED's. They cost less than $30 for a small set and you can install them yourself. Get one that has a remote control and that lets you change colors, dim etc.

It won't change colors with the picture, but it doesn't matter. The ambient light looks great at any color, and color changing with the picture is distracting anyway. The reason you want ambient light is to make the TV easier on your eyes when watching it in a dark room. The "wide" light it casts on the wall behind the TV softens the harshness of the TV light itself.

Yes I'm aware of the DIY solutions.. (installed a LED strip last week)

I'm in the market for a 70 inch TV, and have been doing a lot of research. I keep reading over and over that 4K is not a worthwhile investment at this time. Nor is 3D.

this is how I feel and my receiver has a display dimming feature that I love watching movies in the dark.

I wished I held off a year on buying a nice tv cause the 4k tvs have really come down. Last Nov I bought a 55" Samsung 1080P 3D tv that was on sale for the same price as the non 3D one $1,100. This year you can pick up a decent 4k for the same price. Maybe next year I'll upgrade but my current tv is too new and the picture is too good to just throw it away or sell it for a few hundred..

But I would never buy or use this Ambilight. I like colored leds lining the ceiling in theater rooms but not to where they take your eyes off the tv

Why Ultra HD 4K TVs are still stupid - CNET

I definitely agree that with double the pixels, you'll see a difference if you get right in front of the screen, but that's not how you watch a movie. There will be no discernible difference at proper viewing distance depending on the screen size.
