External harddrive problem...
Wanted to acces it but couldn't find it in my computer anymore. Changed some cables... still not shown and/or accessible. The harddrive is not completely dead... it sounds normal... no ticking or other strange sounds. Also the light on it works so i assume not a power problem...
Anyone knows what this could be? Could the data be recovered? Thanks. |
Try to get to the data with a Linux live CD. If you can, copy everything. That could be your one and only hope.

Windows 10? Do you see the drive under disk management? Right click on Windows Icon. Choose Disk Management. You might see and assign a letter to the disk, Then see it.

Does your BIOS see the drive? |
Have you tried disconnecting it. Restarting computer. Reconnecting it?
Happens to us sometimes. Sometimes they stop talking back and its a pain in the dick. |

Chances are you will have to bring the machine in, have someone open it, remove the hard drive, and see if it can be recovered. Or you can try opening the machine yourself, unscrewing the drive and sending it to a data recovery company. Here in New York it would cost around $80 to see if it could be recovered or if it has to be sent to a lab. In that case, it would cost....who knows. LOL Best of luck. This sucks big time. |
I keep an external USB drive caddy that you can just pop drives in and out of for instances like this. See if you can take the drive out of the external case and connect it internally. Drive itself is probably fine.

What make/model of drive is it?
Is it making any barely audible clicking sounds when you try and access it? I have an old WD external that developed the infamous 'click of death' - but it could only be heard if I put my ear right next to it. |

drop it to the ground and maybe starts working.
Buy the same harddrive and switch the disk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyC-_pVBpOQ |

I've only had this when I plugged a lower power socket in one of mine once, misplacing the original lead. Hoping you get it sorted :2 cents:

I like "porn nerds" idea, I think it cannot do it any damage, if it's in ziplock bag, you can only try :thumbsup |
Have your tried the most obvious thing of all - prayer?
You know...that thing that thousands of childlike adults do daily who live in a delusional world ruled by supernatural creatures that exist in an other dimension and yet infulence every aspect of your daily lives. They are said to be most interested in who you fuck...odd that one. |
