Why do gyms have open showers?

Most of the people do not like them, some even do not go to certain gyms because they have open showers.
So from the business stand point - why would a new gym build open showers?
I see the point that they want to save money on water as people would shower less and for shorter times (it is uncomfortable for many people so they want to get out as fast as possible or even shower at home).

Besides all the gfy jokes, what is the real reason?

MiamiBoyz 09-08-2016 02:43 AM

The showers are the only reason I go to the gym.

The real reason is because if a dude is actually working out then his is most likely a cocksucker.

bns666 09-08-2016 03:54 AM

weird, in the last 15+ years i have been to several gyms in wide area of my part of town and all of them had closed showers.

and i don't live exactly in the first world country.

LizardKing 09-08-2016 04:00 AM

Can confirm - Nearly all showers in austrian gyms are open, but actually nobody cares.

GYM is a manly place. You come there to pump iron, wash up an go home.

If you're a metrosexual scared that someone would see yout tiny pee-pee, you should find some girly spa place instead.

CurrentlySober 09-08-2016 04:40 AM

What is a 'shower' ?

But from the business stand point - you can not lose "metrosexual" clientele.
Ps: not only tiny wee wee guys do not like these kind of showers.

CaptainHowdy 09-08-2016 05:28 AM

Good question. I guess is to allow body shaming.

I am not worried about my pee-pee, more likely about other people pee-pee :1orglaugh

It's so some guys can hang out in the shower for way too long

I was trying once new gym and i left after one month because shower was inside locker room so basically impossible to avoid seeing someone pee-pee, as some people dont bother to cover themself while they are still inside shower.

beerptrol 09-08-2016 05:40 AM

So the owners can secretly video tape you and make money off the videos. In your case people pay to not see your shower video

Look Chang 09-08-2016 06:16 AM

I don't see the point of open showers with such strict rules:

his point is men shouldn't give a shit either way. we aren't delicate little flowers that need our privacy, we are just hosing off after a workout.

mostly it's easier for gym's to clean than having to clean out stalls.

Adnium_Ivana 09-08-2016 06:58 AM

I've only seen open showers at yoga studios these days. I haven't seen open showers in gyms for a long time -I feel most gyms have retrofitted those; at least here in Toronto

That may be a fair point, but the reality is that most (or at least many) would prefer otherwise. Thus, from a business stand point, open showers may lead into you losing customers (as Klentelaris did for example).

My ideal compromise would be open showers but with some kind of small walls between each one (similar to what you see in public toilets, between urinals).

Paul Markham 09-08-2016 07:09 AM

To be honest it was never something I worried about. Maybe it's a pussy thing.

Again, you are so cool, but my wondering came from the business stand point.
That some "tough" men do not mind and some "pussies" mind, we already established :)

That is no surprise as it makes you more money by not losing some customers.

And I was not surprised about older gyms having that, maybe back in the day business and marketing sense was at a lower level so to speak, but when I saw brand new gyms, pools etc building open showers I was just curious about their business sense.
I mean surely you will attract the likes of miamiboyz, so maybe that was one of the pluses from $$ perspective :)

again, you missed the point.. That is not the reality, that is what YOU believe.

Men don't care... Men don't require comfort, we just need hot water. Since most males, especially the ones who frequent gyms, are not lacking in testosterone or shy nancies that give a shit what others see this isn't an issue for us. In fact, most guys care more about equipment than showers anyway.

Private stalls take more time to clean because you have to clean them individually as opposed to bleaching and hosing one area all at once. More corners, more work, more time to clean = more overhead. Some newer gyms will have them, but mostly just in the womens change rooms.

Mickey_ 09-08-2016 07:57 AM

The open showers act as a simple tool to separate the men from the boys. :pimp
Open showers are the doormen of gyms.

(but to give you the answer you're looking for from a business perspective: they are cheaper to build and maintain)

Not sure about real reason :upsidedow

Choopa Phil 09-08-2016 09:27 AM

All the gyms around here have closed stalls...I shower at home anyway so no big deal.

Sly 09-08-2016 09:33 AM

We went swimming at the YMCA every week when I was a kid. Everything was open. Most guys walked around naked, no problem. Not giving a fuck.

Every now and then you would see a guy standing in the shower wearing swim trunks. The irony of being that self-conscious and insecure is that it only draws more attention and creates bad assumptions.

Own yourself. Worrying about what others think of you is a waste of energy, particularly because nobody is thinking about you near as much as you think.

And also, only thing for which i know what have open shower is pool - but there is ok as most of people dont shower fully nude. But few time i encountered really old people and that is image which i more preffer not to see.

Spunky 09-08-2016 09:38 AM

Thought it was a hygiene thing. Less areas for bacteria

Rochard 09-08-2016 09:40 AM

They don't want people jerking off or fucking in the showers?

Sly 09-08-2016 09:41 AM

Gentleman. Casually noticing another man's dick does not make you gay. Fear the fear!

tony286 09-08-2016 09:47 AM

gym showers whether open and closed, are fungus factories no thank you.

TheDynasty 09-08-2016 11:23 AM

Homo....

CamTraffic 09-08-2016 12:34 PM

Cause it's cheaper to build.
No one gives a shit if your dong is smaller :1orglaugh

PornoPlopedia 09-08-2016 12:58 PM

In Montreal and suburbs all the gyms I have visited had closed showers.
Most of the swimming pools don't

The swimming pools are heavily subsidized by the city or by the gov. (YMCA for example) So your point stands here. From a business logic, close dem shower curtains :thumbsup

What about dem kinky boys wearing a chastity belt :1orglaugh :error

Those are the same guys that pick the urinal right next to you when you're the only one in the restroom and there are a dozen other urinals to choose from.... lol

I go to the gym and shower at home. Don't like stepping on other peoples pubes.

DBS.US 09-08-2016 09:10 PM

It's cheaper to build and people let them get away with it.:2 cents:

ContentPimp 09-08-2016 11:28 PM

Gym showers tend to be even very useful.
Take a shower while having a live show at once. Win win! :thumbsup

I think it's more about inner confidence. A lot of men are obsessed with Dick size = masculinity and sexual prowess. I know that whatever my size, my stamina, and technique beats all those extra inches.

I know I've competed with them on the same playing fields. :1orglaugh
