Video Editing Software ?

I was looking at Pinnacle Studio for video editing.

I'm hoping for some feedback from GFYers about what you find works best, before I shell out the cash on it.

What video editing software do you prefer?

Cheers!

Appreciate your post. I'll check it out. :thumbsup

I used Pinnacle for years. It's fine for basic editing and such. Switched to Adobe Premiere CC a few years ago and have never looked back.

DonJon69 10-26-2016 06:00 PM

the best and free ones are

hitfilm express

blackmagick design - resolve and fusion8

j3rkules 10-26-2016 06:01 PM

I use Premiere Pro and I could recommend it. It is very feature rich, but has a steep learning curve. You could take a look at DaVinci Resolve 12 and see how that works out for you.

TheDynasty 10-26-2016 11:08 PM

all good suggestions!!

NatalieK 10-27-2016 12:17 AM

as many have said, Pinnicle is too basic, sony vegas is remarkable but expensive. I haven't tried adobe premiere.

I'd like to know from those who have used both, SV & AP, which is better please?

Matyko 10-27-2016 12:22 AM

We use Sony Vegas [v12] and happy with it. :pimp

charlie g 10-27-2016 05:21 AM

I use vegas too. and like my brain, I only use 2% of what it can do.

LatinaCamChat 10-27-2016 05:26 AM

Cyberlink Powerdirector, affordable and thus far the best experience I've had for editing 4k video

celandina 10-27-2016 06:19 AM

Final Cut pro and SoundTrack Pro. Because without a good sound your end product will be crappy... :2 cents:

Tulku 10-27-2016 08:25 AM

I do some basic editing .. but Camtasia Studio

candyflip 10-27-2016 08:28 AM

Apple Final Cut Pro X
Adobe Premiere
Davinci Resolve
Avid Media Composer

SpicyM 10-27-2016 08:33 AM

Vegas Movie Studio - great for the basic stuff, very easy, intuitive, cheap and one time fee
for $80 - you can't beat that with anything else

or Sony Vegas if you need to do professional movies but personally I haven't found anything I could not do in Movie Studio so far

rastan 10-27-2016 08:51 AM

Premiere has been my workhorse for years, but I don't mind Vegas either.

Elli 10-27-2016 11:08 AM

I used Pinnacle for a few years but found it very limiting. I moved to Vegas Studio Pro, but the rendering options on it were pretty limited and I had trouble getting good quality out of it. I moved to Premiere Pro CC about a year ago and would never go back.

NB: The lastest update to Premiere added a far easier to use colour correction panel, but it now chokes on my video card. It crashes on renders more often than not by maxing out 99% usage on my video card. If you're getting Premiere, have at least a somewhat decent GPU.

that's what has always been good about this program. You can learn how to do basic editing in it within 5 mins but you can also do a lot of complex stuff with it as well that is still pretty easy to work with. Premier is obviously limitless but I never found it quite as user friendly.

right + you don't have to pay monthly fee for Vegas :thumbsup

apb 10-27-2016 12:26 PM

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I really appreciate it! :thumbsup

It sounds like Vegas might be a worthwhile stepping stone before using something more advanced like Premiere.

I don't have any real experience, so user-friendly to start with may be the best option for me. I'm glad I asked here, as the Pinnacle site made it sound like they are the best of the best.

I knew GFYers would be able to help! Many thanks! :)

Try the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio and see if it's good for you. I personally can't stand Premiere.

ExtremeBank_Adam 10-27-2016 01:45 PM

Another vote for Sony Vegas Pro. I use 13.0 now.

mikesouth 10-27-2016 03:18 PM

People will recommend what they are familiar with usually let me try and save some time here

Sony Vegas is the best choice if you are a newbie to editing, it is way more intuitive than anything else but it can also do very advanced compositing and titling so you can grow with it as you get better it is still capable

Adobe premiere is not nearly as intuitive and for me it was slow, cumbersome and required too many intermediate transcodes, making it too time consuming. but if you need After Effects Premiere integrates nicely....but it isnt necessary I use After Effects with Sony Vegas with no problems. also Borix FX and others

Unless you are an applehead and have axcess money forget Final Cut

everything else kinda falls in the middle...my point being IF you are new to editing Vegas will have you up and running quicker than anything else

That my two one hundredths of a buck.

jsmih 10-28-2016 04:12 AM

Another suggestion is that I find the multitude of YouTube videos really helpful when trying to figure out how to do something complex in Vegas. It also has a tendency to do strange things to panes pretty easily (they appear, disappear, lock to the main window, if you resize it to where it hits a specific portion of the screen etc). Currently trying to figure out how to get the preview window in the video fx pane to reappear after I somehow made it go away LOL.

candyflip 10-28-2016 04:21 AM

Sucks that you just missed a huge half off (I think) sale. They just relauched after being sold by Sony to Magix.

Video editing software for film enthusiasts ? VEGAS Pro

I'm guessing that you're not on a Mac, because at $299 one time payment...Final Cut Pro X is the best bang for your buck. Anyone who tells you otherwise is someone you shouldn't ever take advice from.

celandina 10-28-2016 09:15 AM

Any good content has 2 components ... Those being equally important....Picture and Sound... Nobody here in this thread seems to give shit.. So go for something cheap and reap shit returns....

I did not even notice Sony had sold that.. but looks like nothing has changed except the names. So it's called Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio now :winkwink:

Magix has been in the software business for a while.

Sony has a new and improved suite that they are touting as a more professional creative suite solution called Catalyst.

Catalyst Production Suite

I've been using Movie Studio 13 Platinum for a long time, it's awesome.

It's a step down from Sony Vegas 13 but uses the same user interface and stuff.
I mostly use it for YouTube gaming video editing but I find it quite awesome.

I would say it's the best editing software for the cheapest price. 60 bucks or so instead of 400 bucks

Here's a link to it on Steam if you want to check it out.
Save 50% on Movie Studio 13 Platinum - Steam Powered on Steam

(update) I actually just noticed it's on sale as well, 50% off. 33 bucks CAD for me. Very good price.

What are you making people? Lucas like movies?
I'm using Microsoft Movie Maker for trimming and watermarks, save it and upload to my tube site. :thumbsup

it is not about Lucas movies... But as I have said above, 50 % is a good sound !!! But if you only steal others content and do not make your own, only to trim the length and the frame sizes so you can get rid off the watermarks and that you can cheat the major tube software, slap your own logo on it and probably slap your own copyright on it.... Yada yada

But as Inhave said above:

Hmm I see.. pity you can't buy a lifetime licence as they only offer subscription based plan for Catalyst. I hate that..

Staying with my Movie Studio :winkwink:

Sony in May 2016 sold everything to Movie Studio guys, so you have Catalyst without realizing it :thumbsup

Not sure what you mean. I bought my Movie Studio licence 3 years ago, when it was Sony. Now when it is under Magix I would buy again.. though I don't need a new version so far.
