Best Way to Password Protect / EncryptFolder in Windows?
I have a folder on my external hard drive that I want to password protect.
What is the quickest and simplest way to password protect it. I don't really want to download. |
Bitlocker if you run windows.

Bitlocker only works if you have Windows 7/10 pro version and a TPM module. I think winzip will even do a folder zipped to AES256 if you want a super simple free version. GPA/GNU is the super secure way via PGP key pairs. There are a ton of simple free programs to do it with, I use axcrypt but it's only free for a while, boxcryptor for dropbox and box.com. Or use sync.com in the cloud that is truly zero knowledge but won't protect it on your desktop. Just hit download.com and there are a ton of decent free ones.

I used to use Gpg4win. I haven't used it in a while. But I still have it installed.

When I right click a folder it comes up with CRC SHA which opens four options from CRC 32 - SHA-256 but clicking them doesn't do anything.
I can't understand why a simple password protection isn't built into Windows in the first place. |
AxCrypt will ENCRYPT all data in the folder (including file content and even file name and extension!)... There are also folder lockers and hiders like Anvi Folder Locker or Wise Folder Hider
