US Navy destroyer takes on water after collision

https://s2.reutersmedia.net/resource...=LYNXMPED5F234

Washington (CNN)A US Navy destroyer is under its own power but has limited propulsion after colliding with a merchant ship about 56 nautical miles off the coast of Yokosuka,

Japan, a US Navy official told CNN on Friday.

The USS Fitzgerald suffered damage to its starboard side above and below the waterline, resulting in some flooding, the Navy said.
The vessel was taking on water after the incident, but the crew was working to stabilize the ship by pumping water out of the hold, a US Navy official told CNN.
A US Navy official told CNN that the entire crew has not yet been accounted for.
The official said emergency procedures have been put in place and the ship is not in danger of sinking at this time.
The Japanese Coast Guard is on the scene and a US official said that US tugboats and other Navy assets, including aircraft, are on the way. The official said the merchant vessel involved in the collision is the ACX Crystal based out the Philippines.
The USS Fitzgerald requested the assistance from the Japanese Coast Guard after the collision occurred at approximately 2:30 am local time on Saturday.
The US Navy's 7th Fleet twitter account says the Navy is working with the Japanese Coast Guard to conduct a medical evacuation of the injured. The extent of the injuries remains unclear.
The Fitzgerald is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer with a crew of approximately 330 sailors.
The ship completed $21 million in upgrades and repairs in February and is currently forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, the service said.

Generally speaking the vessel approaching the starboard side has the right of way... unless their are other factors (restricted by draft, fishing gear down etc). So, at first glance, its not good that they were struck by another vessel on the starboard side as they would be required to yield to the approaching vessel. Of course, it goes without saying that there was a colossal fuckup in communication between the two vessels considering both the safety and navigation protocols and rules and the number of people on the bridge of each vessel.

Not good at all. I wish them well.

7 people missing and not to be graphic, but it's clear from the footage that some are smashed into the ships frame on the left hand side. Sad

Were they playing a game of chicken?
How the hell do you not see and avoid one another? Did godzilla grab the tanker and ram the U.S. ship with it!

It was 2am in the morning. They aren't gonna see anything it would all be about both ships radars and the radar operators..

Vendzilla 06-17-2017 09:22 AM

That cruiser had some of the best radar ever developed, someone was sleeping on watch. We scraped bottom once, but always worried about rubbing up against a whale or surfacing under a ship sitting dead in the water.
That has happened

Duterte is anti American and all Filipinos on that "Japanese" ship :2 cents:

US destroyer collides with PH-flagged vessel - The Manila Times Online

"It was not immediately clear what caused the collision, but NHK said the massive 222-meter (730-foot) NHK container ship made a sharp turn around the time of the accident."

Could be the Filipino ship turned to hit the destroyer.

Bladewire 06-17-2017 11:16 AM

So the containership took a sharp turn, hit the destroyer, and called in a mayday.

Seven Sailors Missing After US Navy Destroyer Collides With Merchant Vessel Off Japan | Zero Hedge

"The Japanese coast guard said it received an emergency call from the container ship, the ACX Crystal, reporting the collision at around 2:20 a.m. (1720 GMT Friday). It was questioning crew members of the ACX Crystal, which is operated by the Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen K.K., and was treating the incident as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official."

This is the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.[2]

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

They found the 7 missing sailors drown in the ships compartments that were damaged and flooded :(

I am rather surprised that this was able to happen. With the radar and tracking systems this ship must have, how could it not have seen it long before it hit.
