A U.S. aircraft has shot down a Syrian government jet over northern Syria, Pentagon says

A U.S. strike aircraft shot down a Syrian government fighter jet shortly after it bombed U.S.-backed Syrian fighters in North Syria, the Pentagon said in a statement Sunday. The Pentagon said the shoot-down came hours after Syrian government-backed forces attacked U.S.-backed fighters, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, in the village of Ja?Din. As the attack unfolded, the U.S. military used a deconfliction channel to communicate with the Syrian government to stop the skirmish, according to the Pentagon statement. U.S.-led jets stopped the fighting by flying close to the ground and at low-speed in what is called a ?show of force,? the Pentagon said. Roughly two hours later, despite the called-for stand down and the U.S. presence overhead, a Syrian Su-22 jet attacked the Syrian Democratic Forces, dropping an unknown number of munitions on the U.S.-backed force. A U.S. F/A-18 promptly shot the Syrian aircraft down ?in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defense of coalition partnered forces,? the Pentagon statement said. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.d7a783e050cf |
Su-22 (aka Su-17M)? I'm surprised. Didn't know someone still uses those stone-age dinosaurs...

You consider that that old Syrian fighter jet was 'cannon fodder' perhaps?

btw about 15 years ago, I pulled up in my driveway (lived near a airport) and one of those flew right over my house on approach to land. I jumped back in my car and ran over to the commercial side of the airport to check it out. Turns out the guy who owned it, had 2 old era Migs like that and he was testing using some sort of powder to seed Hurricane clouds as a way to lower the strength of them. He used the migs to fly out to the storms and would release these little canisters of powered stuff into them. Not sure what the idea was behind it, but I assume it didn't work out lol. |
What will the Russians say?

Now Syria has cut communication with the US military, and will consider all US planes and drones hostile. Wonderful.

If "sky incident prevention interactions with US" as i writed ahead not work, we will find something else. |
I doubt that the Russians nor the Americans would risk a war over their proxy armies. But Russia has drawn their red line of a anything that flies "target zone" to the west of the Euphrates river and smack down the middle of Raqqa -- not very smart.
The Russians just de facto ceded a part of Syria away from Assad to an occupying army and local rebels -- that is really not smart. Foreign armies fighting in Syria was always a bad idea. Should have dug a backfire trench and let the fire burn out to conclusion. :2 cents: |
