Putin is pushing ahead with plans to axe thousands of science jobs in the country?s universities.

Plans to fire 8,300 scientific workers based in higher education institutions were announced by Russia?s government last year, but were then put on hold amid signs of a possible economic recovery.

Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian prime minister, said that it was to ?optimise spending allocated for higher education by redistributing funds to the most important areas and by reducing inefficiency?.

But he said that the cuts should not have an impact on programmes that are judged to be ?socially significant? and, as such, many leading institutions will be spared.

These will see their funding increase by 17 billion rubles (£218 million). As a result, other institutions, including the Russian Academy of Sciences, will be particularly badly affected.

Russian government cuts 40% of state-funded university places

The Russian government is pushing on with plans to cut 40% of state-funded places in domestic universities in 2018 and to cut teaching jobs at state universities.

These plans were first announced about a year ago. However, their implementation was postponed due to signs of the beginning of a recovery of the Russian economy from the economic crisis and the possibility of lifting of at least part of Western sanctions against Russia.

Still, the beginning of a second wave of the financial crisis ? fuelled in June by a resumption of the devaluation of the national currency, the ruble, and an awareness that sanctions against Russia would not be lifted soon ? has forced the state to return to these plans.

The cuts are the consequence of reduced funding for two programmes, known as ?Development of Education? and ?Development of Science and Technology?.

It is planned that this year up to 500 scientists will be laid off from Russian universities in early 2018. Large job cuts are planned in the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Kurchatov Institute.

Overall, up to 8,300 scientific workers will lose their jobs in Russian universities by 2020, while the share of spending on education in total budget expenditure will fall from 2.75% in 2015 to 2.45% in 2020.

In addition, the government plans to cut spending on research and development activities of Russian universities and reduce funding allocated on the development of their technical base. Finally, funding of graduate scholarships will be halved.

The cuts have already been approved by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

I love how nobody mentioned how badly in shape the Russian economy is in. That is why he's doing this, its' prudent. Their entire system is based on one thing only, oil. The price of oil is KILLING the Russian economy, when it was nice and high they were spending and spending. It all came to a halt quick once we starting producing our own along with all the renewable sources we are finally using. EU also is using less and less Russian oil/gas at the already low price. They are hurtin.

It would be foolish to base the majority of your country's economy on one thing such as oil. Even in our industry we have a saying "don't put all of your eggs in one basket". Even more so with oil - it's easier to make now more than ever, easier to find, and less in demand because these two items not to mention more and more electric cars....

It's funny, but 2 of 6 US shuttles (33%) have killed their crew (a super-duper technology I guess), but no Russian rocket has killed a single American shmastroaunt. Be be clear, the Russian rockets haven't killed any cosmonaut as well. We've lost 4 (much less than Americans), but not because the rocket technologies. It was a parachute failure and demagnetization during the landing procedure.
