Renewables cover about 100% of German power use for first time ever

Renewables cover about 100% of German power use for first time ever

At around 6:00 am on 1 January, a combination of strong winds and low demand after New Year's Eve celebrations meant that wind power alone produced about 85 percent of Germany’s power consumption, according to data provided by the Federal Network Agency. Hydropower and biomass installations covered the rest, as there was no solar power generation before sunrise.

Coal, gas and nuclear power generation was cut to a minimum as power prices turned negative and surplus energy was exported to neighbouring countries.

“Nobody expected we would reach 100 percent in the early morning of a winter day,” energy state secretary Rainer Baake told the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Most experts believed it was most likely Germany would cross the threshold on a sunny and windy spring day. Renewables set last year’s record of almost 90 percent of total power use on 30 April 2017.

“This means we are entering a new phase,” said Felix Matthes, research coordinator at the Institute for Applied Ecology. “Renewables have finally left their niche.”

I got solar. Love it. It's $125 a month and I can use all of the power I want for most of the day.....

He's just a 73 year old morbidly obese hate troll. He mostly just talks hate to stir negative emotions in others. Trump actually does very little and on the rare occasion he actually does something, other than golf, he fucks it up royally and blames somebody else.

I want to build my own house that is completely off grid. I'd like a land line cable internet solution but that's it. I know with out a doubt I could build a custom house that could be completely powered by solar, including A/C. Heat would be the issue but even that is workable with the right build.

Nord Stream was never to supply Germany with power just another back up, off the top of my head its like 1/3rd of Germans power is from gas and Nord Stream will supply 20-30% of that. Nord Stream is more about having Russia in Germanys pocket, than Germany being in Russias.

One of my life goals. No joke.

The homes you're speaking of are called Earthship homes. People have started building them all over the world. The idea started in the 70's and after decades of testing they're a proven off grid solution. Self filtering water system, no electricity, no heat, but stays around 70 degrees year round. You position the house in relation to the sun, and a multitude of other things...

What were you paying before solar?

Only in a world of participation trophies for all, is 85% "about" 100%.

Is that Common Core or something?

you left out plenty, including

the fact there's a 25 year contract to supply a minimum of 9 billion cubic metres (320 billion cubic feet) of natural gas per year for 25 years to germs.

nord stream bypasses Ukraine, Poland etc, they lose billions and the pipeline can be used as a political tool to control them.

germany is just as susceptible to ruskie political control via the pipeline.

there's more.

you might want to do some factual research for once.

"The gas import bill in the 12 months rose to 22.6 billion
euros ($27.8 billion) on volume of 4,778,136 terajoules (TJ)*.
Russia's Gazprom said on Jan. 3 that it had shipped 53.4
billion cubic metres to Germany. Converted to terajoules that
would constitute 39.3 percent of the total."

https://af.reuters.com/article/energ.../idAFL8N1QD53G

So about $10.9 Billion per year from Germany for Russia.

I will bet you $1000 that there is a 25 year contract to sell gas, just as i stated.
