What's the cost of living like in Portugal?

Anyone know? Not looking for anything fancy. Just typical middle class lifestyle.

Depends where. But overall probably the cheapest western European co to live in.

I live about 20 miles from the border in Spain.

really? I thought was slightly, only slightly but more expensive to live than Spain...???

If it´s cheaper, cool to know, maybe make nearly a million here and come over the border, should be a millionaire then :1orglaugh :thumbsup

It's also interesting as a low tax country:
https://www.pwc.pt/pt/fiscalidade/im...ept_secret.pdf

since, for the first 10 years living there you would pay zero taxes..

There was a thread about that on GFY already:

I'm thinking of 6 months in Portugal somewhere in the countryside. Must have decent Internet speed though.

That would get me a decent bench at the homeless shelter where I live.

Damn! Here a 3 bedroom apartment is about $1500 a month and if you want a house it will run you $2000+

yeah, you´re right about Portugal´s cheaper than Spain, here 400€ gets a nice apartment and 600€ a month a nice villa with a pool...

eating out is about the same :thumbsup

Our electric and water is about 150€ a month and we spend about 400€ a month on shopping, inc. cigs at 4€ a pack. This is for good food, fresh meat, bbq´s, steak and alcohol daily, wine, beer, maybe limon cello or what ever we choose that day... :thumbsup

If it's like Spain then rural internet probably isn't great. I did 5 years up mountain, about a mile from the nearest town and 2mb was the best I could get.

I live in the country side about 35 Km from Porto and have 1GB connection. But in general Portugal is pretty cheap to live if you stay outside big cities and tourist areas.

Exceptions are car prices and gas which are very expensive.

Do you live in a town or rural? Internet speed gets stupid here as soon as you get out of a town, and mobile is pretty shit as well. Where I used to live, only one company had cover, the others would just cut out.

You live down river from me, I'm in Zamora, right on the river. if you find loads of old tennis balls, that my dog. hehe.

City center Lisbon is NOT cheap, if you goto outskirts of the big cities or popular tourist/beach areas it can be cheaper but in general the cost of living and real estate in Portugal has increased alot over the past 3-4 years.

It depends on what you need I guess. You can have a bunch of expenses even in the most affordable places if you want fancy stuff.
After visiting Portugal for TES in March I spoke with some locals about the cost of living there. They're saying people get by fine on 800 EUR/month or so. That's very affordable for western Europe. I suppose you have to be local and frugal to get that kind of expenses.

I noticed, looking for a studio/apartment in Lisbon, but not cheap anymore.
Must look where the surfers and backpackers stay.

I don't need much. I just need a pretty chill environment. Maybe hop on a highway and find my family and I in Italy one weekend then later, France. I've heard such great things about Portugal.

Can US citizens get extended stay visas? How long is the 'default' stay given to Americans in Portugal?
