Alexa echo dot?

Anyone found a practical purpose for an Alexa device?

Got an echo dot as an Xmas gift...and I'm thinking its best usage so far is a hockey puck on the pond.

I have one to call for help. Usually the response is muddled and missing words. They end up walking down here anyway.

I used it for music but can’t remember the commands. “Alexa, play Creedence Clearwater Revival” would sometimes get “Okay, reed clearah revival isn’t available. Would you like to hear Ree Drummond recipes?” I just said “Alexa, play Nirvana” and I got “okay, here it is”. What’s playing is an orchestral piece to put me to sleep.

“Alexa, what time is it?” “The time is 11:38 pm in Westport Point Massachusetts. Westport Point is at the southern tip of Massachusetts. The area is surrounded by water with a...” and I gave up. I asked for the time only, not a geographic dialogue. She drolled on for about two minutes including latitude and longitude, weather and approximate population.

I bought the whole package a few years ago. It’s still packed with a new Bose speaker. The house bought all rooms a unit including bathrooms. When I find mine I’ll put it on eBay.

I know there are tons of functions but my amnesia stops me from using them. Eventually I’ll print a list of functions.

“Alexa fuck me” response is “I’m sorry, I can’t do that”. Using strange requests is comical.

I use it to turn lights on and off.

Normal light switches don't spy on you by listening to every word said in the room 24/7. :2 cents:

It's the 21st century equivalent to The Clapper. :)

I use mine all the time. I have a couple of them (one in living room, one in bedroom). It's great for multi-tasking or listening to podcasts/online radio, etc. Great for music, too. You can even call people on it.

Hell, I just used it to spell 'equivalent'. :thumbsup

I have it for lights, music (linked to my Spotify account), controlling TV, setting reminders, timers, alarms. Could even use her to turn on the Xmas tree during the holidays. You can do a ton of shit if you want to get involved with home automation. The speaker is OK, but there are better speakers available for the Dot. The Echo itself has pretty decent sound. I now have one in almost every room in the house. She does piss me off sometimes, but normally I have no issues.

i cunt a4da Alexa echo dot... :(

pimpmaster9000 01-07-2019 03:11 AM

we are starting a project that will incorporate amazon voice services and it will be "powered by alexa"....it will cater to the needs of a very specific group of people and the voice control feature is just brilliant for this...but I do not own one and I am amazed they manage to sell 100million of them...

The sound isn't bad, but I paired it with a Bose soundlink III and sounds better.

Figured out how to play my Samsung S8 playlists so now I don't have to deal with Amazon music or spotify.

A neighbour of mine has the Google Home thing and has his whole house on it: Indoor and outdoor lights, security cameras, heating and AC.

I just purchased the new Apple TV and it has Apple Home built in so I am currently getting things integrated.

The Amazon version is supposed to be able to do all of the same things as its Apple and Google counterparts, no?

AdultKing 01-07-2019 06:54 AM

Already being in the Apple eco system, I have an Apple HomePod.

It's good but I haven't found a use case for it that's absolutely necessary to my life.

I do not like the Google or Alexa assistants as they record and listen to you 24x7 and that data is shared with advertisers.

That's fine...the beer companies are welcome to send free samples to my door anytime.

What about having days of recordings of everything you do and say sent to other people?

If I let paranoia govern my life...I wouldn't get out of bed.

Nothing I'd say in front of Alexa would be of the slightest interest to anyone anyways.

That was my first thought. Perhaps someone with more creativity and imagination than me - I can't even get it to tell a dirty joke.

“Alexa, tell me a dirty joke.”

“I’d tell you a dirty joke but I wouldn’t want you to soil yourself.”

Oops, forgot to laugh! I’m

SilentKnight 01-08-2019 07:21 AM

"Alexa, tell me a smut story."

"Okay, Dave...Hal's a pervert."

Rochard 01-08-2019 07:27 AM

I love my Alexa Dot. I have one in the office, the family room, the master bedroom, and one in each garage.

I use it mostly to play music, and once a day to read the news. I also use it to set alarms. Also, as a family we ask Alexa for random facts that come up.

I need to start using it to turn on and off lights in my house...

tony286 01-08-2019 08:57 AM

I love the dot, I had the first echo but it fell off my desk. I got the new dot for Xmas , the speaker is really good for something so small. I use it as a speaker and , for music and the news. Its great. Alex is also great and never doesnt understand what Im saying.
