Best free FTP client or how to configure FTP server properly?

I've been using the FTP function of Total Commander for years but since a year or so it is a pain in the ass. It connects well and does transfers well but when it's been idle for like minute it starts to behave like shit, huge delay before something happens, then after 10 seconds or so it will say: disconnected, connect again? This is really annoying when I'm doing live editing and want to upload and test things quickly. This happens to be with several hosting providers. I tried FTP clients FileZilla and another one and they either don't connect, or they connect but they won't transfer anything. WTF? FTP used to be so easy and fast and reliable in the 90s but now it's a pain in the ass. What has changed in FTP world? Are the FTP servers more secure and demanding and how can I change this?

Thanks

On the Mac I use Coda for FTP functionality, it's also a text editor, but the FTP client is great.

Command line is also great, but not for everyone. :2 cents:

On Windows I have no idea.

WinSCP is by far the most robust and scriptable FTP client I've ever used. So good in fact, so irreplaceable it is, that I run it in Linux under Wine and it works flawlessly. Every other FTP client available for Linux fell short and left me disappointed.

+1 for Filezilla, you might want to toggle timeout and passive/active mode and see if that fixes things for you.

I use FileZilla too.
