I finally replaced my old twin iMac27's and replaced it with a single 2018 Mac Mini, and a 49" Ultrawide monitor. I fucking love it. The monitor runs cool, the computer runs cool and makes zero noise, and my is finally clutter free. The monitor is equal to 2 x 27" ones.

And look closely at what's on the screen. The desktop is OS/X, but I've got a second OSX and Windows 10 running at the same time in separate windows.

I can now work and post anti-trump rants in much more comfort. :)

Rochard 01-11-2019 11:31 PM

I run three smaller monitors. I don't need huge monitors - I don't need 24 inches for Skype. I like running one thing in one monitor.

This my home office a few days ago...

Rochard 01-11-2019 11:32 PM

Although that huge monitor is bad ass. LOL.

Nicky 01-12-2019 03:07 AM

I use a bigger monitor too instead of several smaller, right now I have a 35" ultra-wide, works nicely.

Wow, looks nice! I am thinking about replacing my old windows machine, what software are you using to run windows there on the same time? How is the performance?

Looks awesome!

You know what? Isn't it cool that we all get to work in the industry that we like, and we get to do it from home, and make our own setup and office just the way we want? Talk about being lucky..

When I first saw Ultra-wides I thought the idea was ridiculous... but the more I read and more youtube videos I watched, the more I liked it. So far this is only my second day on it and I find it pretty comfortable.

There are a few ways to do it with programs like Parallels, VMWare, etc. I'm going to change this setup though to connect to my PC with VNC, and connect my laptop through the network. This will will give me "real" machines instead of virtual, and let me clean up the monitor and crap thats behind me.

Yes sir it is! And it still works too. It was my first. Sigh..! :) I have another Model 1 just to the right of that one which is taken apart and framed (Motherboard and Keyboard only), and a Model 4 that can connect to the Internet, but is currently put away the closet.

CaptainHowdy 01-12-2019 07:57 AM

I actually have to jump-start my desktop computer . . .

Paul&John 01-12-2019 08:11 AM

Can that thing run in a regular aspect ratio of 16:9 with a resolution lets say 1920x1080? So it will display things only in the middle and the left/right part will be blank?

Love how clean and minimalist your desk is. Very nice.

Does the screen bother your neck at all? Looking left and right. Or do you find it no different than having multiple monitors? I have multiple monitors but they are at an angle, looking at a big flat screen seems like it would be a bit much.

Those ladies (Scarlette Johansen screengrab from The Island, and Skye from Agents of Shield, are my best sources for imaginary porn. The shocking thing those women do for me.. christ.

Thanks - that is one thing I was really looking forward to. Now all I have to do next is hide the Mac Mini (the small black box). I am thinking about tucking it under the desk with a small DIY shelf. Not sure yet.

The monitor itself is curved, so looking left and right isn't much of a problem. Though when I had 2 monitors, the angle that each was to the other was a little more than this one is, if that makes sense. The left and right edges of this monitor are further away from me, than the far-left and far-right edges of my twin monitors were. So far this is taking a little getting used to. Still comfortable, but different from what I was using before.

CurrentlySober 01-12-2019 10:23 AM

Looks really good. I especially like the 2 different instances of OS X running together :)

Enjoy :)

Pretty cool. Any complaints at all? Can it run all the programs you need?

That is very cool. I am doing some upgrades to my computer system and am thinking of going from 2 24in monitors to one big on like you. I'm glad to hear it works well for you. Do you find yourself missing the dual monitors or is this one big enough it doesn't matter?

So far I'm only running the same programs I did on my old system/s so yes. The thing I notice most of all now is that it's not slugish.

Actually I came across a problem. The monitor supports 5120x1440 and so does the Mac Mini, but when connected via HDMI or USC-C, the best I can get is 3840x1080. I tried a USB-C to Display Port, but the problem remains. The include HDMI cable should be and HDMI 2.0 cable but it too doesn't give me high res. Connecting the monitor to my PC does however. I called Apple and they are exploring.

To get around this, I connected both the USB-C and an HDMI Cable from the computer and the monitor at the same time, as the monitor actually can operate as 2 x different monitors. The Mac sees it as 2 different monitors too. So after that I place the Mac in extended desktop mode and voila- it works. In fact it might be better for me this way as sharing my screen via Skype for clients would be awful in ultra widescreen format.

I love minimalist setups like this one.

hony 01-14-2019 08:03 PM

Amazing, I learn something new every day! Never heard of ultra-wide. Would be better than the laptop+monitor I'm used to. More screen space is always better!

I'm used to having my monitor above my laptop though. I wonder if there is an "ultra-tall" monitor available?

BagOfDirtyAssholes 01-14-2019 08:41 PM

Window right in front of me / right behind the monitor.

But I know what you mean. I'm slightly claustrophobic myself. This new monitor takes up less room than my old dual iMac27's so I feel less closed-in.

Great setup. What are the specs on that mac mini to be able to handle OSX and Windows. I've been meaning to do this for Qbooks and other programs. Sick of running to machines.
