Videographers: What lenses do you use to shoot porn?

Just a fellow photographer and video guy interested to know what you're packing in your kit. :winkwink:

I know a lot of you are shooting wide angle for those booty shots, but how do you handle those kinds of takes without getting the unflattering distortion that makes faces look ugly? Anyone have any particular success with rectilinear lenses? Are you shooting telephoto some of the time, and what is the sweet spot for you?

yuu.design 07-11-2019 06:00 PM

in my experience, with nikon d800, i use a 14/24mm , and the 24/70mm, most of the time you do not need anything else

celandina 07-13-2019 09:34 AM

28 to 135 mm zoom

Sweet spot at about 80 mm

So basically the same as what works for portrait stuff then. xD Figures

I mostly shoot glamour and luxury stuff haha. My only experience shooting porn was for the susan block institute. They shoot on these ancient ass camcorders with THE most gawdawful lighting setup. Fuckin sucks that my one shoot with a penthouse pet is absolutely fucking unusable and i would never ever ever in a million years want to use it in my reel or port

We use also quite ancient cameras Red Epics ( about 10 years old). It is NOT about what camera you use, but how you light it and how you handle the set.

Hah you don't need to tell me that, i still shoot stills on a 5D mark II. They even used those as crash cams for a bunch of marvel films and theres a reason they still stand up today. Pretty sure Red Epics are going to be relevant forever. The advancements cameras have made in the past 10 years is a prime example of bikeshedding, since we've had the technology to get stunning pictures and footage for a long time, the only areas left for cameras to grow are largely trivial. I just wish with all the crazy RGB LED lights coming out nowadays more people would experiment with more than just the typical high key flood light look. I guess tushy raw is trying this whole guerrilla harsh lighting thing that makes it look like every frame was shot with a shitty flash but i swear there are much more creative lighting setups that would work much better.

I only shoot . . . for the moon.

Paul Markham 08-02-2019 03:13 AM

I used to use a fix lens 85mm I think. Unless you're using a very good lens zoom sucks.

candyflip 08-02-2019 04:21 AM

A set of Rokinon / Samyang Cine primes and two Sigma Art zooms.

candyflip 08-02-2019 04:22 AM

Laowa has some super wide lenses with no distortion.

DSLR video doesn’t hold up or stand up these days. It looks gross.

Wasn't the give me pink stuff all fisheye or similar distortion? I mean, not a typical choice and I only really shoot photos, so I'm not an expert, but I'd assume it is the same for motion, in the sense that some options will be more standard and some more of a statement and some shooters will go for versatility, while others switch lenses or cameras for every little difference.

I mean it's possible, but its better to stick to superwide. Fisheye is just way too obvious and it fucks up girls faces. Makes them downright ugly.

At least it exaggerates the fuck out of nearby dicks and butts though.

I am also mostly a photographer but to answer your question about motion, no its not exactly the same because the barrel distortion is more noticeable when something is flitting in and out of the center of frame. You can fix it with rectilinear or in post but when you're trying to exaggerate big asses, the distortion is sometimes the intended effect.

I mean, moire and shit yeah, but if you've been keeping up with magic lantern there are plenty of ways to make old cameras shoot at higher bitrates and stuff. I suppose dynamic range is the biggest downside for me personally.

Then again nothing from yesteryear is going to compare to these new cine cameras. Blackmagic especially is just killing it right now

depending on distance of shoot... close up and personal, 50mm but from a distance of maybe 20mt across pool sides and other areas, 200mm can give lots of depth with a low f-stop :thumbsup

While i personally am a huge fan of shallow DOF for my other work its a huge pet peeve of mine when i'm jerking off and not everything is in focus. I think... like maybe from a storytelling perspective, DOF is obviously meant to draw the viewers focus to a certain area, but i've always found that porn is better as an interactive experience where you just frame up all the good stuff and the viewer decides where to look. Like, if they want to look at the feet they can look at the feet, or the face, whatever, don't cut it off on the knees and just focus tight on just the one hole
