Battle of Briton
saw a great doc on netflix... for instance the RAF used carburetors on their planes while the Germans used fuel injection. every time the blokes would dive the engine would stall...
the blokes had 14.7 seconds of continues fire from their guns while the Germans had 47 seconds. AND the Germans had 20mm canons while the blokes had 303 machine guns.... a really big difference... the Germans could out maneuver, out gun the blokes and lost anyway... one guy said that Hitler was the best general in the British army. one thing interesting is the Germans had 12 fighters in a group and the blokes had 20, so the Brits over estimated the German air power with the Germans underestimated the British air power. Pretty wild for sure. an other thing is the Germans had radar, more advanced radar and thought the Brits radar was shit. but the Brits were waiting above them in the sky when they showed up... and the Germans only had 10 minutes of air time over England due to fuel. and this was interesting, Hitler order his guys NOT to bomb London, some guys fucked up and dropped a load of bombs on London causing the Brits to bomb Berlin. Hitler got pissed and started the bombing raids on the cities. SO the attacks against the RAF airfields stopped. allowing the RAF to stay healthy ... wild stuff, well worth watching |

WWII is just an amazing story on so many diffrent levels.
Germany bit off way more than they could chew. Albert Speer was Minister of Armaments and War Production for the Nazi party and wrote a book about his expierence during WWII... It's an amazing book. |

Hurricane 1's & Spitfire MK1 had carbureted engines.. The later models all used fuel injection it's just the battle of Britain was early in the war so had the 1st variants of Spits and Hurricanes.
The carburated was not incapable of matching the fuel injected 109's but they had to fly smarter for sure which meant they had to use the G-forces in their favor.. You wouldn't nose down the plane directly you would roll the plane into a dive so the fuel lines would stay pressurized. Example all those loop de loop bi planes that did all those fancy dog fights of WW1 were all carburetored, but they flew them in a way that used the g-forces to keep the fuel pumping. It's the same with the early Spits & Hurricanes, it's just fuel injection was better and required less babying of the aircraft. I'd also 100% disagree that a 109 could out maneuver a Spit 1 or Hurricane 1. Those were two of the most maneuverable planes in WW2. In fact I think the only fighter that could out turn a Spitfire or Hurricane was the Zero. The 109's & 190's were more like Mustangs & p40's they Zoomed & boomed.. The Spits & Zero's turned and burned.. The reason the Brits won is because they had radar systems that Hitler didn't know about and had a lot more aircraft vs what Hitler expected. The Brits were always in position to attack the bombers.. It was more a battle of killing bombers than a battle of dog fights although it's known as one of the greatest eras of dog fighting. |
