What is your accent?

Do you do business in a language different from your native language, or do you have a regional accent? How fluent are you?

My biz lang is English, cause I'm too lazy and stupid to be fluent in another language, though I can get along in several. I speak with a veeery slight NYC/Boston accent.

CurrentlySober 08-12-2019 09:50 AM

I've been told I can speak fluent bollocks by a few people...

I just have a generic British accent, but when I was in the States, I had to use a fake American accent so that people at the drive thru could understand me... :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

For all you doubters, this is exactly how Bostoners talk - literally "Pak the Caaa!"

Is there such a thing? Saw something recently that said that in the UK you only have to travel about 30 miles for the accent to change noticeably.

I was watching a UK show last night where a family of four - people who have supposedly lived together for decades - all have different accents. :helpme

EddyTheDog 08-12-2019 03:45 PM

They call mine middle class Estuary English.

Posh cockney basically.

I am in NZ again and I will pick up a Kiwi accent really quickly.

Fush and Chups anyone?

One of my brothers, born and raised in California had a Boston accent, at least as a kid. He is dead now, so not so much.

My accent will often depend on who I spend time with. Had friends from Texas visiting and picked up some Texan too :D
I grew up near DC so that's the standard accent I have in English, though my first language is Russian. People are often very surprised to hear me speak Russian as I apparently don't have a foreign accent in English unless you count American English and I can definitely name a few Brits who would call that a foreign accent :D

The only truly "no accent" multiple language speakers I know are people who grow up in a two+ language country or people who move to a country before they're 12.
