Tech you were using before it became commonplace and used by all?

Example: I was thinking back to when I used to sit infront of a bank of about 20+ video cassette recorders, all wired together and put blank tapes in to record from the master.

Not that exciting really, but at the time, 9 out of 10 people didn't have even a single VCR in their home, as they were still brand new and incredibly expensive....

What tech were YOU using before it got commonplace and everyone else was? What were you an 'Early Adopter' of?

I still carry my beeper. It no longer works but I like the way it looks hooked on my belt. Chicks like it too, they're always asking what it is.

I've owned at least five pre-ipod mp3 players since 1999, the first one I had to transfer files using a parallel (pre-usb printer) cable. My cars all had decks that could play mp3 cds too.

I took my Dell DJ to the Costa Rica gathering! At the time I believe the iPod was out, but the DJ was so much better in my opinion because it had massive amount of storage. I also went the Zune route for similar reasons.

Then I finally got the iPhone 4 because of Siri.

We had the internet in the mid to late 80s with Prodigy. I knew of no one else locally who was online at that point.

I had an IBM PC jr in 84' and they offered modems for it but never got one.

Also in 84 I had a $1000 home tower stereo at 14. Since I was 14 I paid for everything nice I ever had and worked for it. I even bought most of my own school clothes cause my mom was a single mom and couldn't afford name brand clothes.
