When I See People Wearing Masks...

...I feel better. A little safer. Do you? I still do not get close to anyone in the store or on the street but seeing most New Yorkers wearing masks does make me feel like everyone is at least trying to comply with social distancing and getting ahead of this virus.

Does it make you feel any better when you see your fellow citizens walking around with masks on? I wear mine when I go out, do you?

candyflip 04-01-2020 10:31 AM

I'm not leaving my house and haven't had a need to. So I'm not seeing people wearing masks.

I've got a box of N95s here at the house though, thanks to the Chinese company who makes a couple of my products for me.

CaptainHowdy 04-01-2020 10:40 AM

Talk about a false sense of security . . .

OneMillionGirls 04-01-2020 10:41 AM

In Toyko & Soul they walk altime with mask to protect first themself from air conditions. Thats the reason why they have at moment so low cases after infects.

Aspecialy Europe is in thiscase to slow. But back to your question: Yes i feel safer when i see people with masks, but make this sense when they still smoke cigarettes before/after for the including death rate?

NEED4SPEED 04-01-2020 04:02 PM

The other day I saw a Chinese guy with a mask on in his Honda Civic BY HIMSELF at the light & started cracking up hysterically. Don't ask me why. Went into the grocery store and about 1 out every 5 people had on masks and gloves.

Rochard 04-01-2020 04:10 PM

My wife works for a doctor and we have masks and gloves here at home. I haven't been in a grocery store for almost two weeks. Next time I go out I'll be wearing them.

Its not about a false sense of security. Its about cutting back on the chance of transmission.

Whats the cut back? Maybe 10 to 20%. well that could be all it takes to break the chain.

BlueBookJosh 04-02-2020 01:17 AM

You all forgot rubber gloves too... Kinky and healthy :thumbsup

Vendzilla 04-02-2020 01:48 AM

mandatory, by yourself in a car? i think that would make the mask less effective

Well, technically is no need as it's closed space, but since you need to have it moment you step out, that is probably reason why people have it now inside cars as well.

Darkcrni 04-02-2020 03:06 AM

Do you really think the mask will help?
The fucking virus can get in you through your eyes if he wants to.

It helps , even homemade cotton mask helps, but for 100% protection it is required full hazmat suit.

I think it can cut back on the amount of exposure you get. And they have said that matters.

If someone sneezes and you walk into it with a mask on you get 10 particles on you, and if you don't have a mask on you get 100. More exposure = more severe the symptoms are. Thats the way I've seen it explained by one virologist as to why some of these doctors and nurses are dying from it.

No.. I don't feel better or safer at all - The COVID-19 spores could be on their clothing -

I was grocery shopping at Wegmans and down the bread aisle there must have been 10 people. If you know Wegmans, those aisles are not all that wide - I don't know any of those folks or what their hygiene habits are - A lot were Asian or from India so that should give you a clue -

It sucks to have to spray yourself down with disinfectant before getting in your car to go home - Then call home telling her to open the basement door so you can go down the cellar to remove your possibly infected clothing - Yeah it sucks -

However, the CDC notes that evidence suggests that the novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials, which includes clothing.

Plus, any sort of mask supposedly does a good job on stopping an individual spreading the virus. This is especially useful if they are still pre-symptomatic. So I look at this as more of a preventative measure for others versus a protective measure for the wearer.

I'm in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I went out to the supermarket this morning and almost everyone is wearing masks today.

Not me. No gloves, no mask. I walk about five miles everyday. I wash my hands and don't touch my face. That's it...

Let the chips fall where they may...

I totally understand your point, but - respectfully - I just don't do things for show. Especially if everyone else is doing it...

Bill DiBlasio just announced that he recommends New Yorkers wearing masks or scarves when going out. I'm so grateful for his announcement.

There's no fucking way now that I'll wear a mask...

Man i must be living in fucking stupidville! Went to Walmart the other day to get a script (scared as fuck wearing mask and gloves!) and none of the pharmacists had any protection on! Couldn't believe it :\

If you have any weight issues or are prediabetic you may want to reconsider that.

Already taken into consideration...

6ft tall, 185lbs. Full physical exam on my birthday, Jan. 21. Nothing. I take zero medications.

Those who are at high-risk need to isolate themselves. Not the other way around...

I would welcome the virus. I'll get over it and move on. Or not.

Oh good for you. I remember when you were trying to lose weight. Glad to see you lost it. I saw a doctor on news today and they said something like 100% of the patients that are in their ICU and intubated are people with a bmi of 30 an up.

I appreciate that, man. And that's my point exactly. I'm assessing my risk and strategy based on the information out there. Still a lot of unknowns, but I'd rather rely on my analysis than follow someone else's advice who's interests may or may not mesh with mine.

That said, my wife hasn't left the apartment in 10 days. And she's younger and in perfect health. She's set her course and I've set mine. Everything else is just white noise...

The vast, vast, vast majority of those in serious trouble have pre-existing conditions. Culling of the herd????

Also you don't just wear it to protect yourself from not getting it, a big part of it is if you do have it (but are asymptomatic) you are far less likely to spread it to others. That's the biggest help of the masks which most people in the west don't think about, most think it's to protect them, but the main thing is to protect others.

In Asia it's very common to wear masks when you are sick, usually people mainly were masks to protect others.

I was out and about today in Brooklyn. Tons of people not socially distancing, not wearing masks. There's no enforcement either way. Some supermarkets keep people waiting outside, but inside everyone is on top of each other.

And the SUBWAY IS STILL RUNNING. But - they've cut service - so the trains running are PACKED WITH PEOPLE.

Either isolate or don't. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's being half-assed...
