If this was 2001 this would be a dream domain to have.

But this is 2023, and while it would be nice to have, it would not be worth as much as it would have been ages ago.

For a business or media, it may be worth spending a lot of cash on, simply for the free press it would get.

If you were mainstream media it would be good for a TV show about sex.

But one suspects a porn business will buy it for too much money, then panic and do very little with in, and end up making a loss.

I suspect very unlikely, unless you're a big media business, or such as Facebook, where $20 million would be a tiny part of your marketing budget.

To me, this is worth max $2 million, or at least years ago it was £2 million.

But this is the reality, most people never think about. If this domain name was such a big money maker, then why sell it?

But as i say, I suspect someone will buy it, then find they cannot make as much money from it as they thought.

At $20 million you would need to be making at least 1 million pure profit each year.

I have just had a look at https://www.sex.com/ and the site does not even work for me.

I suspect the person who purchased it at $13 million has probably not made a lot on it, and is hoping to make a profit on selling it.

Unless a big media firm sees this as a bit of a marketing opportunity, then I do not see it selling or $20million.

I have often seen people live on hope, and try to sell domain names for thousands if not millions, and no one is interested.

Ten years or so ago, they may have got $20 million, but things have changed a lot.

Then again, some media firm with a few billion spare may purchase it, simply for publicity.

$20mil+ domain name is obviously an investment to resell it in future or asset in money laundering scheme.

with that price it would really need a hell of a website to make money just to cover investment and then generate profit.

Yep, it would actually have more sense to use it for mainstream/education purposes then porn, but question is can it generate enough money.

In any case, it is a top domain and it may make sense for top 5 adult companies, some big mainstream or gambling companies, etc... Just to have the domain itself, it is true that it is a rare opportunity of 3 letters com domain.

But the word cannot be trademarked, the domain will not rank well in google for the main keyword.

And a suspicious thing is that they advertise on the sales page that all content creators are manually verified which makes it the safest site on the internet for adult content. It would be nice to know how much of the traffic is type-in and how much is organic... I'm sure that a lot of the organic traffic they have is from the old pin board user submission that they still have available. Something that whoever buys the domain will probably have to knock down and the millions of urls end up deindexed in a matter of months...

If you had a fashion brand, it would also be cool.

Having SEX on t-shirts would be a great brand.

But the people selling it, I think are being greedy, as to me at most it is worth $2million.

The best ones are the ones who buy things like xxhamster.com and think people will pay them $100000 for the domain name.

Over the years people have tried to sell ok domain names but asked silly money. They buy for $20 then try to sell for $100000, when I have seen people offer $2000 or more and they would have made a nice profit. But greed kicks in.

For fun I give it a few years knowing they are so greedy they hang on hoping to get more, then the domain drops, and I have picked it up for $10.

i was listening to a youtube vid where a chap has made millions buying, doing up houses then selling them. He said the mistake people make is hold on for months hoping to get that bit extra. He said he just sells and as long as he makes a profit he is happy. He said in the time many will have sold a house, he will have purchased 3 or 4 and made more money selling them than that person just sat around.

It is a bit like bitcoin. The smart people purchased cheap, then sold. But many purchased and held on because of greed, then woke up to find the price crashed.

So what makes it worth $20 million today. Indeed was it even worth $13 million in 2013. One presumes the value was based on the presumption the domain would gain value over the years.

Many factors could suggest the value has decreased. Such as phone apps now very popular. In 2013 most people were using websites. Today I suspect app use is huge. We have a LOT more domain types, such as dot this and dot that. In other words supply and demand. The more domain extensions means less value.

2. 1.5 million unique visitors per day. This may or may not be because of the domain name alone. The site (that does not look that good) https://www.sex.com/ looks to be some sort of free tube site. So it could just be popular because of the free content.

The question that should be asked is how much the site makes in profit and how much does it cost to run.

Just to confirm, clearly I never said a bank would lend me personally. I obviously was stating banks will lend anyone as long as the collateral or purchasable product was worth the money, so the money can be retrieved at anytime.
