Do you eat REAL caviar?

If so, then where do you buy it, canned or not canned.
I ask this because I ordered "Salmon Caviar" and the Japanese staff was like WTF!
Then they explained that I wanted "Salmon Roe" which is not real caviar because it's
NOT sturgeon fish roe.

This is what I eat :

Is Sturgeon caviar worth the price?

*** Not asking for a friend; because I'm not buying that sorry mofo any fish; even if it's just the egg.

:)

Yes! 'caviar'... A great euphemism :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

There's an idiot that used to post here, he learned the hard way that caviar only comes from sturgeons when he moved to Louisiana, tried to sell bowfin roe as caviar and of course, fucking failed again.

Caviar is from sturgeons and the rest is roe or fish eggs. The people that market that shit are really sensitive about it.

But bowfin roe is good, and costs way less than caviar.

I like these replies!

I gotta find a legit source near me; not trusting internet on this one. Too easy to fake me.

But no problem; because I like the salmon roe enough to survive the craving.

:thumbsup

Caviar comes from sturgeon fish family. Usually from Iran and Russia.

OP, I am going to break your heart, but in Japan rolls are not considered sushi and almost never served in kaiten sushi bars

Huggles 02-12-2025 11:40 AM

I wish McDonald's would do McCaviar.

I did not order sushi. I ordered tuna sashimi and salmon roe.
How they serve it is their own style.
I like how they put it in the roll instead of just putting it in a dish.

:)

y'all are baby killers :upsidedow

never eaten fish eggs. never would, but they look interesting in pics. kinda pretty actually

in a blind taste test would peeps be able to tell the difference between sturgeon and salmon?

fuzebox 02-12-2025 05:43 PM

Salmon roe is delicious but I wouldn't refer to it as caviar.

I buy a variety of caviar from a local guy who cans his own: https://www.caviarmangourmet.com/col...-caviar-kaluga

that's cool, just wondered if fish eggs were fish eggs and it was more of a 'high end branding' thing for the sturgeon stuff

salmon vs sturgeon, I guess diff waters and species account for the taste difference. intradasting

Salmon roe is huge compared to caviar and you can tell immediately the taste and texture difference

Just say no to sturgeon, the countries that produce are polluted, to irradiated and to fucking regulation scummy to deserve a cent of your money.

Smoked fish roe is where it's at! And for fucks sake tell Chefs to stop removing the roe from scallops, it's the best bit and looks pretty.

Was gonna say all the caviar I buy is sustainably produced in the USA, but I remembered you're Aussie so have at it :1orglaugh

If you ever get the opportunity, go to this place in London, it’s exceptional :)

I love this one:

https://www.markys.com/caviar/sturge...-hybrid-caviar

But for me it started like with sushi...hated the first one...then got used to it and love it since then. Caviar with boiled eggs is amazing.
