Do you know the origin of the bikini?

BP4L

You should.

The two-piece bikini bathing suit debuted in Paris in 1946. French designer Jacques Helm is credited with the invention, although some people debate who came up with it first.

That's funny since one of my highschool English teachers claimed her husband's cousin wrote it.

Edit: The song, that is.

Althought there were two piece sarong style outfits in Southeast Asia and various sunny island travel destinations before 1946, what we think of as a bikini today was initially pretty much a French couture thing.

Maybe he did. If you know the cousin's name, I could probably ask.

I don't know the cousin's name. I could look up the author of the song but that wouldn't do me any good. The teacher's last name was Adlestein*, so I guess there's at least a fair chance the cousin's name would have been Adlestein, as well. I don't remember any other details but if the real author has a cousin who lives in Ohio and is married to an English teacher, I'd say the story checks out :)

* Possibly Adelstein

It was actually first designed during the war to cut down on fabric use. It was called Bikini becuase of an Atomic bomb that was detonated in a place called Bikini. The designer who copied the war design "Jacques Helm" thought that it was as 'explosive' as the bomb that was tested in Bikini that he called it that.

I do.....

The bikini was invented in 1946 and named after the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, the site of atomic bomb testing. The inventors were two Frenchmen, Jacques Heim and Louis Reard. Of course, Heim and Reard didn't create the idea of the bikini; drawings of bikini-like suits have been found on wall paintings dating back to 1600 B.C. The modern term "bikini" for a particular bathing suit design was first used by Heim and Reard (who were, in reality, the re-inventors of the bikini). Heim was a couturier designer from Cannes, France, who had designed a very small bathing suit called the "Atome" (french for atom). He hired a skywriting plane to advertise his design by skywriting "Atome -- the world's smallest bathing suit" Three weeks later, Reard, a mechanical engineer, had another skywriting plane write "Bikini -- smaller than the smallest bathing suit in the world."

Here's a picture of Louis Reard....

I thought the Bikini Atoll was actually pretty much back to normal. I remember seeing some nature show about how the ecosystem was effected and adapted.
