I am trying to translate a family holiday recipe from the US recipe into UK baking terms. When a recipe in the US just calls for 'flour' is that all purpose flour? It is a brownie type recipe.

That generally means all purpose flour, but if there is no leavening agent (baking powder/soda) in the recipe, then it's self-rising flour. :)
