Is flash really that wonderfull?

It seems flash is becoming really popular but is it that effective considering that it takes longer to load and most surfers are still using dial up connections. Anyone got any thoughts on this.

Flash is way cool but I can't imagine a scenaro where I would use it on one of my sites. I still believe in building a site as basic as possible to keep load times to a minimum. Even with fast connection speeds, people are looking for even faster load times.

I believe keep it simple, keep it fast

That's what I thought. I used to like flash, but I HATE IT. My fellow GFY'ers have convinced me that it sucks.

Maybe that's a bit harsh, sometimes it's good if it's a flash movie or something cool like that fight film. But for adult sites, and navigation, it's not worth limiting your surfer base just because you want to do flash. Plus, I've heard that the novelty of flash is wearing off.

Remember there are still people who use the old 56k connection http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif, or still have old non-flash supporting browsers.

What's more important to you, a sell, or really neato graphic.

On my boss' site I built a super simple navigation flash (against my will) and it's 14k in size. Those same links, if they were text, would be under 300 bytes.

You do the math.

"Remember there are still people who use the old 56k connection "

MOST RedShoe. As in way more than half of surfers.

And newbies with ready to draw plastic are going to be on a dialup hands down usually. Not many will go to the expense of cable or dsl to start out. If they do can you say duh? What if they don't like it or don't have time to indulge?! lol

I believe that flash should be solely used for interactive entertainment or cartoon-movie type purposes on a website.

Using flash for navigation is like using a gold plated mack-truck for grocery getting.

redshoe, same here, a year ago i worked in a web design co. in my country with 3 other guys and our investor wanted everything on flash! This man loved flash and of course we hated it. Flash is responsibly for many heavy sites out there. I personally approve it only for some flash banners that are less that 30k and have soooo many things to tell to the user.

If you're trying to sell something, you shouldn't bloat your pages with the latest bells & whistles so that potential customers, who lack the technological means to appreciate/access them, will turn away.

Aim for pages accessible to 98% of the surfers instead of 78%.

Build pages that are firendly to all browsers.

For what we do, flash would scare away more than not. If they don't have it, they have to download it. That takes time, and the horny surfer has the attention span of a four-year-old.

If you need something moving, just slap together an animated .gif or two... That's easy enough and almost all browsers can read it.
