I'd love to live long enough to see...

Conscious AI?

Human cloning?

Extra-galactic space travel?

The discovery of an irreducible quantum particle?

What scientific/technological "miracle" would YOU most love to see before you die?

Its already here.

Just goto learn to look for it.

What would I like to see...

Humm...

I dunno. Nothing comes to mind.

Thats it.

For once I would like to see nothing.

THAT WOULD BE DIFFERENT.

Are you an existentialist? Why don't you have any crazy dreams all your own? You must care about something... That Icarus post was inspired. It suggested the hyper-mature detachment necessary to see all things as ultimately equal -- does that make you happy or sad?

Its Ironic.:glugglug

Crazy dreams.
No dream is to crazy, and no dream is crazier than what happens everyday.
Ya know what I mean?

"Hyper-mature detachment" I didnt know there was a label for Apathy.

Mankind seems to strive for Apotheosis. I suppose its a good thing.

Money, attention and food can achieve this presently. So, what we really need is a race of successful, attentive male chefs, who have learned to derive sexual gratification from merely the company of a silent (wholly contented) woman.

n. pl. a·poth·e·o·ses (-sz)
Exaltation to divine rank or stature; deification.
Elevation to a preeminent or transcendent position; glorification: ?Many observers have tried to attribute Warhol's current apotheosis to the subversive power of artistic vision? (Michiko Kakutani).
An exalted or glorified example: Their leader was the apotheosis of courage.

[Late Latin apothesis, from Greek, from apotheoun, to deify : apo-, change; see apo- + theos, god; see dhs- in Indo-European Roots.]

The trouble with "apathy" is people think it's the same thing as feeling sorry for yourself -- as in "I don't have what I want, and I don't give a shit about ANYthing."

But if you allow for a version of apathy that comes not from Sour Grapes but from Sweet Lemons, I'm happy to replace my 3 words for the one.

AI would be at the top of my list. I don't think we're anywhere near to achieving it.

Could you have possibly made this question any easier?

Genetic surgery. A proceedure that will allow us to alter our relpicated DNA to alter our metabolism, resistence to disease and even extend our telomeres.

Interesting.

Personally, I'd love to live long enough to see my grandchildren. That and several billion dollars....and a fabulous contract with a well-known and well-respected company....and a 100 foot clipper. :glugglug

You didn't read the whole thread, because every single one of your desires was addressed in this response.

So, Tala, what exactly is the clipper a metaphor for?

One Direction of Travel

Where do we go from here? The West..
is fully occupied. "Civility"
is out of space. And the Idealists
are crying out for Natives to convert.
Nor do the Anarchists
have any wilderness
to shed their clothes and all their common sense.

It feels a bit like Europe! Now...
that we have reached a Coast of sorts,
and face (like the Atlantic, once)
a vast, impenetrable void, again,
what can we do but contemplate
the cities we have built and left,
as if it were our fate?

You might be right there. This is the second time I have heard somebody say that.
The first time was by a guy in his book predicting the next 50 years or so. It's a great read and he is a captivating speaker.

I'm quite confident that you will indeed see human cloning in your lifetime....

Conscious AI is the one most interesting to me however.

Impossible. Intelligent AI is of course possible but even if we develop a machine as complex as a brain, it will not be "conscious AI" as consciousness is a mind working thru' a brain, not just a brain. :2 cents:

Agree on your mind->brain point. However hoenstly, nothing is impossible and I believe consciousness of inanimate beings will come to pass eventually, atleast as the current definition is perceived :2 cents:

1. Watch 2 planets smash into each other. Of course I wouldn't want to be on one when it happends. :D

2. Terraforming Mars into a breathable planet.

3. Clone yourself (would make my work alot easier with 5 of me sharing the work load). :)

Victor-E 10-30-2004 05:36 AM

I would love for human beings to wake up and realize how wrong it is to divide the planet into countries. Cooperation and coexistence is far more productive than competition and war. Think of how much more we could learn about each other and the world around us if there were no imaginary borders between us.

But I don't want to sound like a beauty pageant, so I'll just wish for anal sex with Jenna Jameson.
