Why is CNN so blissful?

They're talking about Christmas movies and real trees vs fake trees. The earthquake gets about 4 seconds as a "headline" but nothing more. What the hell? Just because it wasn't in the States it's not important enough?

Elli 12-26-2004 02:03 PM

I only get 1 minute to edit a post? That's rather harsh..

nm, they're covering the earthquake now. I guess it just had to wait til after the Christmas bits. *shrug*

You never noticed how America-centric american media outlets tend to be?

Of course they are, they know who their consumer is

xclusive 12-26-2004 02:13 PM

I so wish there would be an unbiased mainstream media there is so much shit going on that doesn't get the coverage that it deserves...

NoCarrier 12-26-2004 02:15 PM

It's not just CNN, every major north american news channels will do the same about an international incident not directly affecting the United States.

wonton 12-26-2004 02:16 PM

Better than mainstream media. Tells it like it is, no matter how disturbing:

FROM THE WILDERNESS PUBLICATIONS

Too often places forget just how small this world is and what happens in one area, no matter how far away, has ripple effects everywhere.

I Like Chocolate 12-26-2004 02:17 PM

BBC is the best worldwide media, imo.

pornguy 12-26-2004 02:17 PM

Commercial America is much more important that a few people getting killed in a quake. Unless it is a quake in the states, and then that was brought to you by Quaker Oats or something.

If it happened in the United States they would talk about it for the next 6 months.

Elli 12-26-2004 02:26 PM

CBC is fairly good. Now they're saying 4000 people dead from their Global Radio News correspondent. That seems more likely than the huge numbers CNN is reporting. Funny how Fox News was all over the war in Iraq thing, but when 4000 people die of natural causes, it doesn't even rate a news blurb. grumble.

Elli 12-26-2004 02:32 PM

CBC just posted this : Help the Red Cross Help the Victims

And it looks like they're having earthquake info pretty much all day and a full hour of coverage from the BBC feed. Whew.

CybermedAndy 12-26-2004 03:19 PM

I thought I was the only one wondering why this wasn't a major news story here.

5000 dead and its hardly a blip here.

:disgust

First time that stuff slammed me in the face and I was made aware was when a hurricane hit and 12,000 were killed in Central America.

That got a write up in a very small section of the back page of the US national press.

First time I realized there were two worlds.

Let's stick to Viagra ads, some nice Christmas images and death insurance with the Silver Care Plan... tho the latter may be kinda insensitive.

yuvalus 12-26-2004 04:03 PM

What else would you expect from a news company as biased as CNN is?

They are the absolute last news coverage I would watch and the least trusted since they have changed so many facts and details over the years. To be fair the often misrepresent details as opposed to changing them...

D-man 12-26-2004 04:07 PM

CNN boring you - well try this then

StuBradley 12-26-2004 04:08 PM

Yeah, if it had happened here they would have constantly interrupted (maybe even suspended) today's football games. Arafat dies and the producer at CBS gets fired for cutting into CSI.
