Let's Make a Deal!

Suppose Lensman changed the rules of the Erasercash giveaway, and the winner is given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a McLaren F1; behind the others, donkeys. You pick a door, say number 1, and Lensman, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say number 3, which has a donkey. He then says to you, ``Do you want to pick door number 2?'' Is it to your advantage to switch your choice?

danevans 10-22-2001 12:36 PM

What do you have against donkeys?

Amputate Your Head 10-22-2001 12:38 PM

I actually prefer the donkey.

SleazyDream 10-22-2001 12:40 PM

isn't a donley a JACKASS?

B.Diker 10-22-2001 12:41 PM

how can lesman give a McLaren F1 for award ? it is over 650000$

i think you must have over 987555 sign ups to win a McLaren F1

funkmaster 10-22-2001 12:42 PM

... just about the same here. IŽd rather have a donkey ... and than make him ride the F1 with Lens on the passengers seat ... uachahaha !!

Okay, for all you donkey lovers, just imagine some locomotive you really don't want in place of the donkey; and for that matter, if you don't want a McLaren F1, just substitute that with your locomotive of choice. Now, do you make the switch?

Forest 10-22-2001 12:51 PM

make it a goat and Serge will get involved

So we got choice of donkey or a train?

Amputate Your Head 10-22-2001 12:58 PM

Now you don't like trains either...? You're a choosy bastard ain't ya?

danevans 10-22-2001 01:31 PM

Can the donkey be trained to say choo-choo as a locomotive?
btw, rhizome, could you please make it easier to understand - what's the point with that *switch* question anyway?
Call me a donkey but I don't get it http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif

It's just a fun math problem modelled on the game show Let's Make a Deal which offered contestants the same choice.

Hypo 10-22-2001 03:10 PM

Switching the choice would be a good idea. The chances of winning increase that way.

Hooper 10-22-2001 03:12 PM

The monty hall game is super cool.

It doesn't matter what you do because the odds remain exactly the same.

You need to get colin in on this thread

What if I told you your odds increase from 1/3 to 2/3 if you switch? http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

hartman 10-22-2001 04:30 PM

what if i told you that you are wrong?

if the problem is solved using false logic the answer is that the chance of winning increase from 0.3333.. to 0.5, however this false logic is the same one that stipulates that since all pigeons are birds, all birds are pigeons ..
(or however you spell the damn birds..)

Kimmykim 10-22-2001 04:31 PM

Damn I thought someone had gay tapes of Monty Hall and Bob Barker together when I saw the title to this thread...

Hooper 10-22-2001 04:38 PM

Actually.. you're correct. The odds of winning when you switch go up to 66%.

Blame gary for getting me high before my previous post ;-))

That's right. False logic would dictate that switching would increase your chances to .5 but correct math dictates that switching increases your chances to 2/3. I'm telling you, if you're ever faced with this problem in real life, then SWITCH!

I wish i had a donkey..
