Then you would need ICANN. Can be done, but seriously for the money you are better starting as a reseller, and see if you can actually make money. Then if it works out become a fully accredited registrar.

Forget starting a new one, why not just buy one of the existing small registrars?

Well it's cheaper to start one than to buy one.. and besides im not trying to spend $100k to buy a registrar

Magg 01-14-2005 08:43 PM

Why not invest into a host rather than start a registrar? You'll make a ton more money and faster in a host... registrar its going to take years to get to even 1/4 of that.

xxweekxx 01-14-2005 09:15 PM

Thanks for the help guys but i wanna start a registrar.. it doesnt matter if it takes years for profit, etc, its all good :)

hehe dont want my own reseller acct.. i want my own full registrar..

From what I have heard and read, it costs between $100K and $500K (depending on lawyer fees and hardware costs) and you need ICANN to review your application, a process that can take a minimum of 12 months, assuming your application is expedited. Elequa, who bought his own ICANN registrar named "I.net" once wrote that it can actually "take years to get accredited from ICANN."

That's why he bought his registrar, to speed things up.

See: http://www.icann.org/registrars/ra-a...nt-17may01.htm

More on costs: http://www.icann.org/registrars/accr...financials.htm

US$2,500 non-refundable application fee, US$4,000 for the first TLD, and US$500 for each additional TLD yearly accreditation fee, US$70,000 in working capital requirement, unspecified Quarterly accreditation fee.

Here's a nice link that outlines all the accreditations:

LOL!!!

yea probably.

If domain reg. is your NEW business, you dont know what you're doing on the net and you will probably go bust on the new venture. :2 cents:

TheMob 01-15-2005 02:21 AM

you would be better off posting on a domain forum IMHO

first off, have you even googled yet? you'll find an abundance of info to research. spend months doing so. if you truly are serious about this then why are you asking @ GFY? If you have the $250,000+ ready, then hire a consultant, lawyer and visit icann.org, and domain forums and "glean" as much as you can. The few people that know how/what is required to enter the registrar game are not going to help create their own competition. if you have already played the reseller game and ready to step up to registrar, then I wish you the best. If you haven't tried being a reseller yet thru enom or wildwest/godaddy then try it out for a little while to see if you truly have what it takes to "survive" as a registrar. Having $$$ is not the only piece of the puzzle... nor is it the most important.

either way, good luck. let us know if/when you launch.
