Best Buy "Extended warranty"

Anyone ever use one of those before? Some camera i bought a couple years ago from there decided to shit out, and i was suckered into buying the extended warranty thing. Just curious to know how it works :) Also, the store i bought it from is out of state, so would i have to take it to the store i originally bought it from?

i dunno .. i got it for my Plasma .. but its fine. I doubt they actually have a warranty, when you get there, they probably just run you around till you don't want to live.

HpicAnn 05-06-2005 12:04 PM

i think is a good decision depending on the prices of what you´re going to buy and the price of the extended warranty

I bought the extended warranty on my digital camera and it took a shit. I took the camera and the warranty (w/ the receipt stapled to it) back to the Best Buy and they replaced it no problem.

And I don't think it matters which state you bought it in, they should still honor it at any Best Buy.

I got it for my subs and amp. I've returned the amp twice and the subs once and never had a problem because of the extended warranty.

best buy has my laptop right now under the extended warranty. I have two problems with it..one the cdrom is dead, 2 the hard drive is dead (so i think) so they tell me....well we can only send it in with one trouble ticket. so once i get the laptop back with a new cdrom, i have to send it in again to have the hard drive looked at...they have had my laptop for about 3 weeks now with no call or anything....

So im guessing about 2 months and I should have it back...

in the short "best buy warranty can lick my ass"

Always get it for your sub/amps & routers......but never get it on tv's & other consumer electronics, its a waste.

HarrytheNazi 05-06-2005 12:23 PM

Get it for the remote alone....

Here's some inside advice from a friend that manages our Best Buy store...

Say you go to a pawn shop and find a sweet deal on a sony TV for example. You buy it and it's got a little wear & tear. Next you go to Best Buy and tell them "I got this Sony TV model 34243242 for x-mas and want to buy an extended warranty for it." They will sell you the warranty no questions asked. Then you turn around and return it to Best buy and exchange it for a brand new one. As long as the model of product you are buying is still being produced, this will work. Works great if you buy lots or containers of returned electronics with minor/major damage.

We've had Best Buy's extended warranty and it's worked out well for us. I don't think you have to be in the state where you bought it.

I tend to not buy them, but for cell phones it's worth it.

LOL i'd think the hard drive would be the FIRST thing you fix, after the CD rom. LOL

For most stuff it's a waste of money. "If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway" I haven't owned anything yet for which this saying doesn't apply.

DateDoc 05-06-2005 08:51 PM

You can often find a similar warranty online cheaper. If possible get a replacement warranty if something goes wrong that way you do not have to wait for it to be fixed.

gecko 05-06-2005 09:20 PM

I don't bother buying them.

pstation 05-07-2005 03:00 AM

thanks for the comments, i'll give it a shot when they open up in a few hours

GirlV 05-07-2005 03:29 AM

It's worth it. Bought a video camera that was on clearance because it was opened box and got the extended warranty to go with it. Long story short, it died after about a month, took it back, they sent it off, determined it was beyond repair, and replaced it with a brand new one.

Mikey_219Inc 05-07-2005 03:53 AM

i refuse to buy this 'insurance' because the god damn manufacturer ought to stand behind its product - and so should the fucking store. but in some cases it can be useful, i think if you buy it you can basically take a shit all over whatever you buy and return it for new.

dude with the laptop - unless im mistaken, they should replace that damn thing for you if you paid for the extended warranty - maybe you should have spilled some water on it and returned it 'totaled' instead of fixable.

Fucking Best Buy. I ordered a wireless network adapter through their web site last week and it came smashed in two pieces.

There wasn't a mark on the box they shipped it in either, and it was held in place by air filled bags, so it wasn't a shipping problem. They just picked up a product that was clearly broken (which you could see easily through the clear plastic packaging) and through it in a box to be shipped.

Actually the product's plastic cover was held together by tape so obviously somebody had already opened it and returned it to the store. I guess they were hoping I wouldn't notice.

MandyBlake 05-07-2005 07:22 AM

never bought one and that's pretty good of me considering the last time i was in there i had like 10 people (no joke) harrass me about getting one.
they were all telling me that no one there works on commission. that may be true, but obviously they all have a quota to hit.

pstation 05-07-2005 07:24 AM

they get fired if they dont sell a certain amount

latinasojourn 05-07-2005 07:55 AM

i never buy an extended warranty on something that is technologically obsolete in 6-12 months.

now a washing machine might be a different story.

pstation 05-07-2005 11:43 AM

Just got back from best buy, they said they're going to send the camera to their service repair center :Oh crap

Raven 05-07-2005 12:26 PM

I wouldn't buy one for a coffee maker; but, for something that costs some high dollars, yeah, I would.

It was worth it for a television we bought...which was fairly high end....and one of those mini stereos for my son....we bought a three year warranty...the thing took a dump and they replaced it with a brand new one.

BluMedia 05-07-2005 12:35 PM

Definetly worth it. I buy an extended warranty on any electronics etc. They are very easy to deal with if you need to return something. Circuit City on the other hand is a pain in the ass you have to call a number and then send it in and then they send you a gift card in the mail.
