Question for Canadians, out of curiosity...

How many of you purchase additional/supplemental health insurance? And what does it cost monthly?

I have what's called critical illness insurance. Since I run my business from home and work for myself I no longer enjoy all the great benefits that I used to get back when I worked at the hospital. The critical illness insurance costs me about $70 a month for premiums, and if I am ever incapacitated to the point where I can't do what I do, or if I need to head south of the border to the US for any sort of treatment I am covered up to a certain amount. (It's a lot)
The other thing I've been doing for several years now is putting away most of my income into a retirement portfolio, because there again... I no longer have the luxury of a nice benefits package through work where they match contributions to your pension fund. It's up to me to look after that.

Buying a little extra blue cross travel insurance when on a long trip is something I do as well.

I pay $40 bucks a month or so into our companies group health Insurance plan. I pay $2 deductible for any script and get basic dental and medical coverage over and above what the Provincial Health program covers.

I am sure I get more benefits but I have never paid that much attention to it as I am fairly healthy and try to avoid situations where I can fuck myself up. I am way too clumsy for any sort of sports that don't involve the bedroom. ;)
